what is this talk about detuning the bass? Does that just make it stand out better? I've never heard of that before.

It's really with the lower tuned stuff, having to tune it say 20 cents flat so the initial hit is more in tune.

Yes good information.. When I track bass I usually tune to the song which ends up being down a little bit
