I've got a set of hs80m's on layaway currently... but I'm starting to wonder if the extra 300 dollars would be worth throwing down on asp8's. Crap... i really can't decide. Godamnit. More than anything else I want my mixes to translate well. I don't care which is more detailed sounding. The 300 extra would really hurt me right now... grr help!

How much more are the Mackie HR824's? They just had a price drop, and are a pretty 'bog standard' quality set of monitors.

mk II or thx? I think they're 440 a pop... out of my reach. I listened to both pairs using the new daath album and also nightingale's invisible. the asp8's almost sound too good. Like I'd be thinking my mix was awesome when really it wouldn't sound good on lesser speakers. Leaning toward the yammy's at this point. the event's did sound AMAZING though- but almost too good for mixing. and also- waaaay too loud. remember, I'm gonna be in an apartment- can't be that loud.

Your loudness problem can be overcome by simply not turning them up that loud. I personally didn't find the ASP8s flattering at all. On the whole it felt to be a very balanced frequency range with a very wide and clear rendering of depth (ie. you can basically hear the settings used on the verbs).

I liked them very much when I tried.

I've asked a local studio owner about the HR824s and he claims he only uses them to 'wow' the clients, as they are near useless for mixing. Apparently they can be okay, but only if your monitoring environment is treated very well. They were my first choice prior to finding the ASP8s.

hi there, happy asp8 user here. when i was buying monitors i listened to the wackie 824s, hs80s, bm5as, krk v8s, jbl lsr8(or whatever they call them) and adam a7s. i ended up going with the events because to me they sounded like i could listen to them all day long without getting tired of them. i dont regret getting them at all. my second faves were the bm5as and the jbls came in third. you really have to listen to them though because opinions other than your own on monitors is useless really. i personally think the asp8s are a step up in performance than the hs80s. like moonlapse said you can really here reverb tails and the stereo image is good. if your room isnt treated well i would probably do that if you go with the asp8s so you can take advantage of their frequency response. as far as translation goes see if you can, do a mix on each and get what works well for you in that regard. best of luck.

I think it really is just two different philosophies on what makes a good monitor. The yamaha's sounded like very clear "normal" speakers where I would essentially get my mix sounding good and end up with a good translation. The events are much much more detailed... better speakers to be sure but what I'm unsure of is whether I'd like to mix on better speakers. Essentially I think there will be more of a learning curb with the events- cuz I will have to learn how a good mix should sound on them. Tomorrow I will bring in some mixes that I know to be far from perfect and see which is less flattering- which one will let me know more of what needs to be fixed. This is such a tough call cuz they're totally different! Ideally it'd be awesome to own both, or at least the hs50's...

Well that's why most professional studios have multiple sets of monitors, Death's Acre. That's where you get the popularity of crossing NS-10s with some Genelecs. The NS-10s are your shit reference, whereas the Genelecs tend to be the hi-fi speaker reference.

Personally I like one set that I learn really really well, and know that they provide an even balance. I've found the ASP8s to likely be that set.

hey man, make no mistake about it. you are going to have to "learn" whatever monitors you get. i found the asp8s really easy to learn. also the reason why better detail is good is because you wont be guessing what is really going on, you will hear it. that said im sure you can get great mixes with either. most of the great mixes by guys around here were done on either asp8s or hs80s(not all i know). listen and work on both and get what is better for you. good luck.

Have had my ASP8's a couple of months and just finished a couple of test mixes last week and they (along with my treated room) translate damn well compared to my previous Yamahas and Tannoys and are a joy to listen to. No ear fatigue, even response and the "enjoyment" factor is high.

Goin in early tomorrow to listen to both over a longer period of time. The yammy's seem to lack lows but have more accurate highs. The asp8's seem too smooth- like theres a cut around 4k. How do you guys feel about the jbl LSR4328P? If I order em through jbl I can get the pair for 500 dollars...

I've been quite interested in the JBL's for a while myself. I like the room calculating tools they utilize to adjust the monitors for you to make the best of your room and your monitors. Events are just good monitors, regardless, the asp8's are still causing a stir after they've been around for this long. I was looking at the Yama HS80s a while back too...I really want to hear a set of the JBL LSR moni's before I choose a pair.

I agree on the loudness thing. Mackie HR824's are loud as shit too, that's one of their main attractions. Just keep the volume low enough to reference. In the middle of the day I'm sure you can crank them if you just have to hear your mix balls-to-the-wall.

Well.. the jbl's were broken so I couldn't hear em, but I spent 4 hours listening to monitors today and I finally made my decision. The hs80's absolutely lacked too much low end- to the point where mixes I know to be muddy sounded good on them. The asp8's were way better in that regard and much much more detailed but the highs were too smooth for me- I wouldn't be able to tell if vox were in need of taming. So... I bought the asp8's AND hs50's to act as reference monitors ns-10 style. Done. I did have to sacrifice the at4040 but I found a used at3035 for 60 bucks. It will do. I'm set.

FWIW, I find my asp8's one of those great pieces of gear that you just don't "notice" after a while. They're there, they work, & they translate. No grief, no fuss. It's not a case of listening to a pair of speakers, but rather the roaring mix coming from the front of my studio.

They'rrrrrrrre Great!

Get em! I had a pair of event tr8xls. I traded them in for the Asp8s. Dude, the difference is night and day! They'll blow you the fuck away. I recommend listening to every album you have on em, too. You want to have at least a 5 foot triangle with em. They have a mirror finish, so you can line your ears up to each one, equally. Pretty bitchin monitors.
