How do the vocals sit? They will probably be changing in the verses.

The verses sound like they need more compression.. One word they're loud, next word they're quiet. But the rest sounds great.
Yeah. That's where I'm having trouble. She sings very dynamically in the verses, where she has a sort of gritty vocal. Since one syllable is quiet and the next loud often it makes compressing any more than I have already a PITA. It pumps or is too noticeable. What do you guys do in these situations? I've tried automation and that helped some. But It's still not there.
