I did this mix for a band I recorded a month ago. Correct me if I'm wrong, but according to my listening, I think I might need to turn the drums down a touch but I am not quite sure. There is a blast beat part in which I'm having a hard time discerning the guitar parts during.

Also, I am aware that my OH's suck on it but I did my best with what I had.

Lemme know.

That works for me. I'm sitting with headphones at work but will give it a try anyways.

The song is pretty cool! I really like the Gorguts kind of vocals.
The guitars are thick and heavy.

The only thing that needs work are the drums that sound to artificial. Instead of replacing the snare fully try to mix it in with the original snare to make it sound more real. And that particular snare sample maybe isn't the right choice for this song. It sounds to apparent in the fills and the blast parts.

But otherwise this sounds brutal. Fix the drums and this will be awesome...

Guitars are direct, "reamped" with Amplitube 2, cab sim off and impulse (Fredman Angled) used instead...a touch of C4 at the end.
Bass is TubeScreamer plugin -> Amplitube SVX -> RBass -> L2

Drums are not programmed, but almost entirely replaced.
I did mix the original snare in with the original, but I also have it gated wierd in that mix so it kills out everything else...I also have verb on it afterwards, but just a touch: it might be too much with the tails from the samps I used. It's basically two samples: I KTDrumtrig'd it so I could run it through DFH once, and then I also added a DM5 micropiccolo sample. I've been wondering about it, since it sounded pretty good at first, but now it's got too much of something. The toms are Andy's Chimaira samples, they were the most organic sounding that I have. I'm happy with my kick sound (Fear Factory kick, left kickdrum pitched down .10).

I think maybe if I cut the DM5 sample from the snare and played with some volumes on parts it might be ok. I actually lowered the volume of the snare during the blast part because it was all you could hear over it.

My OH mics...some cheap AudioTechnica pencil condensers...are complete garbage, as apparent to this mix where you can't really hear any spread between the cymbals. I tried JM's 3:1 method, but it apparently didn't help me much and I feel the OH track is all but ruined...but I made it work where I could.

Thanks for the input, and cheers!

Sounds alot better. But it wouldn't hurt to bring it more forward into the mix. Either get rid of some reverb or just raise the volume a bit. But this is alot better than the first one.

The snare roll at 1:53 sounds 100 times better than on the first mix!

Good work!

Thanks dude. I'm still trying to figure out specifically what I need to do to bring it up in the mix and have it so it isn't overbearing during the blast. It's a goofy patch, but I guess it's ok for what I gave myself to work with. I appreciate the input!

Cool song!! evil as feck.

okay, the mix.. i must say, it fits the style of music very well.
A few things that strike me on my first listen:

- Guitars, bring them up a bit, maybe try a bit more mid on those? they sound pretty scooped right now, could be a thing you are aiming for, and in that case, just turn them up.

- kick.. perfect in my opinion, maybe turn it down a bit?

- snare.. sounds sampled here and there, but does the job, has a bit of distance to it though... less reverb perhaps?

- vocals.. nice!

- overall mix, it works very well.. check the comp settings on your master track though, i think it pumps a bit too much (beginning, the drums.. and in the end). im guilty of doing this too, but it is noticable with headphones on.

Just my two cents, give it a go.. love this stuff!!

Great input, Bob. I'll give it a try here in a bit. Thank you.

GoddamnGuitar: I had automated the snare blast to be lower originally...then I lowered the velocity in DFH so it would play a slightly softer snare sample for that, but it must need something more during that blast. I'll keep working on it.

I don't like the guitar sound (too scooped + almost no attack) and the snare sound at all.

And vocals sound like the singer is using the "i put my SM57 in my mouth to sound "big" " trick or something. Doesn't sound like real vocals.

Kick is a tad too clicky.

The riff at 03'17 sounds a bit like Sepultura's "roots bloody roots" last riff.
