iRig-Amplitube for iPhone,Ipod,Ipad

Don't hate on the iPhone! It can be your best iPhrend!

I got to test out the iRig last week, and I think it's pretty nice. Their isn't an obvious "thrash metal" pedal. To really incant the beast you have to dial a tone together with the Distortion pedal, Overdrive, and various settings on the amps. But all in all, I have to say that this thing rocks. It's just awesome to have an iRig in your bag. It makes sense. Switch over to your Apple overlords and get on board!

Here's my review:

I read up on the Peavey model a little bit yesterday and it defintely looks interesting. The thing that caught my eye was that the app for the Peavey model claims that it can record both the wet sound of the guitar with modeling and effects, and a dry signal too so it can be re-amped. That's bananas! The thing is, they can claim anything they want, but until the product is released and tested, it doesn't mean anything.

Just looking at the two items, I like that the iRig is just so plain and simple. The photo of the Peavey version has an LED light on it, which means that its active and requires a battery. I like the passive deisgn of the iRig better. I don't want to have to think about another layer of battery-life expectancy. The active design of Peavey's product also makes me thing it's going to cost more than $40.

We'll just have to wait and see. And who knows... maybe IK Multimedia will respond to the competition by adding recording capabilites to AmpliTube. That's the nice thing about apps. All they have to do is send out an app update and boom! You got new features.

As far as I know, both apps will work with either "interface." In fact, I've heard you can build your own guitar to iPhone cable if you're handy with electronics.

So it should be possible to buy an adapter which combines one stereo output and one mono input into the three way input of the iphone? does anyone find such a piece on the net? I'm trying to but I have no idea what to search for.

As far as I know, but the only products out there right now are these ones. Also, impedance matching has to be done, since a guitar comes in at instrument level. Like I said, it's theoretically possible for anyone to make a product like this, but mileage may vary (as will crosstalk.) Also, one thing I've noticed is that Amplitube iRig 1.0 lacks an input level control, so that may present a variety of possible issues.

You're right, you should be leery of any untested company that makes big claims before they get their product to market. We will have full recording and re-amping capability - We've been in the app store since day 1 with GuitarToolkit, and we just received an Apple Design Award for TabToolkit. We have no intention of making a sub-par application. ;)

AmpKit LiNK will be $39.99 from Peavey - confirmed. Your question about the need for batteries is a good one. When we were creating it, we found that a passive connection with shielded cable simply wasn't enough to get the sound quality we demanded. You can read more here: http://agilepartners.com/blog

(Just FYI, in testing, we have yet to run out the batteries on any LiNK prototype.)

haha. i can just imagine it now when some bands album comes out.
Guitars were tracked at a starbucks and then later reamped.

My iRig arrived today. I've been testing it with the full version of Amplitube for iPhone. It's fun, it's novel, and I was able to dial a pretty good metal sound with the "metal" amp and the 4x12 A cabinet, with the dynamic mic model, and a virtual TS in front, along with a noise suppressor.

The latency on my iPhone 3G is very high, and I can't get away with the "ultra low" latency setting without clicks and pops in the audio. I'm planning an upgrade to the iPhone 4 soon, but right now they are not available at any price, so I have to wait.

There's a lot of line noise with the iRig. It's usable, for home jamming, but I would never use it at a gig.

I love the iRig. It is pretty awesome being able to sit on the couch and quietly rock out with my itouch.

I am not experiencing much lag with my setup. Do you have a friend with an iphone or itouch? Maybe you could test / compare lag on their device.

Not sure if this will help - but I have read that some folks had to clean their iphone jack to get the iRig to work properly.

I made one with some things I had laying around. I just used an AV cable (that splits a 1/8" jack to three RCA phono plugs) Then put an RCA-to-mono jack adapter on the audio (red/white) plugs (for the guitar). Thenput an RCA-to-female-minijack adapter on the "video" (yellow) plugs for the headphones. If you like, you can stop there, and you’ll have something that will work great...or you can go that extra mile and use an impedance matcher.

Note: not all AV cables are the same. You may have to do some tests to figure out the right configuration.

I got my iRig the other week and an very impressed.

On the noise front I have not had any problems but have also heard somewhere that you should try cleaning the iphone jack.

I have an iPhone 4 and have no lag time at all, well that can be noticed! I have played my bass through and sounds very nice plus on my guitar front, I used the metal cab (4X12B), put the reverb up a touch and increased the presence a little. I then used the overdrive pedal and condenser mic and got a very heavy tone out of it, was very pleased. Is great having an amp in my pocket!
