no doubt - it really is a great sounding record. but 80k is ridiculous - you're better off buying a studio and recording the thing yourself IMO. People seem to think you need to throw a lot of money into recording for it to come out good, when I think taking your time is much more important.

not to say there aren't exceptions, of course.

hehe point taken.

nowadays, if I wanted to record an epic masterpiece, i'd probably track the drums in a nice studio, do the gits and other junk at home on my own time and then go back to a nice studio for final mixing. probably do some preliminary mix stuff at home first, too, but save eq and other more precise things for a better listening environment.

that new Disturbed album....they must have all the $$$ in the world to use for recording an album....

and the album came out pretty lame IMO

everything sounded clear, but there was no bass in th mix whatsoever.

either way those guys are gay

Oh, I totally found the bass guitar on ...And Justice for All. I think it's in "Shortest Straw". Yeah definitely tracking distorted guitars at home is a possibility, but I remember when we were doing the motW records I said to the engineer: "Maybe we could just track the bass guitar at my house if we're running low on time..." And he just about smacked me upside the head. I think you have to have pretty good experience with compression to get really good bass tracks. But distorted guitar seems to be pretty much cake. SM57 in front of one of the speakers grilles, set the level and you're done....right?

yes and no - it depends on what you're going for.

with a good compressor and quality gear, bass can be really easy.

as for guitar, a 57 pointed at the speaker cone will work fine, but there's lots of other good things that can be done. and those amp simulators out now are getting crazy good, too.

as for Justice - there is 0 bass. None. Nada. Zip.
friends of friends know the band and apparently the track was muted during mixing. Jason would be all 'turn me up!' and they'd push the (muted) fader and reply 'how's that?' funny, but kinda evil, too.

You can absolutely hear the bass on Shortest Straw. So this can't be 100% true.

when nd did twtf, i kept expecting mr. kernon to have some sort of fancy-schmancy tricks with setting up the mics for the guitar cabs. i was sorely disappointed. he seemingly just threw up one or two mics aimed at the speakers- said as long as you've got one good working speaker, it'll work fine. maybe i missed some sort of magic spell he cast on it, but i don't think so.
