Is there a way I can get "I'm in a Cage"?

I really don't want to buy the JPN copy of AtWB just for that song. Is there a place I can download it?

Not legally. The tracks have to be exclusive to Japan for quite a while or else they can't release an album in Japan. That's the music business reality.

Someday down the road (just like with Wages of Sin), you'll be able to purchase it individually, when it no longer matters for the Japanese market.

And a reminder for those of you that have purchased the Japanese import: please don't upload it to YouTube, as you'll only be creating more work for me and you. Thanks!

I have to say that "Cage" is one of my favorites. It is so catchy! Can't wait for more folks to hear this one.

Well poo. It seems like it's been long enough. On second thought, nevermind. I forgot that the Japanese release was much later than the other countries. :p

I really wanted to hear it. :(

Yeah, isn't it because Japan's prices are more expensive than the rest of the world?

Basically. Albums are very expensive in Japan. If a Japanese label/distribution company tried to release an album and it had the same tracks as everywhere else, people would simply import it instead. So in order for Japanese companies to agree to release albums (which we want), they need to offer the fans something extra for their money. Hence the Japanese special edition. It's a market situation that any band needs to comply with if they want to have a decent shot at a Japanese fanbase.

And we know that power metal is HUGE in Japan, so our boys definitely don't want to miss out on that!

Too bad companies don't just boycott the Japanese markets until an agreement can be made.

That's a horrible idea. Then Japanese fans would simply torrent the music instead of buying it, so the record companies lose.

Plus, if it weren't for the Japanese market, there would be NO bonus tracks for us to get in between albums, like I'm in a Cage.

Bands make music for the people that like that music and themselves, and for the music itself of course.

Their urge to create music isn't (and shouldn't) come out of the idea for a possible profit in Japan.

The music created should be available to every fan and everyone should have equal rights.

The situation in the Japanese market isn't the reason that we get "privileges" to listen to those bonus tracks.

Listening to it right now. Got chills as soon as the vocals came in. Theocracy does not disappoint.

Aletheus, you're speaking of an ideal world. Based on my experience with bands and the music creation process, FleshAndBloodTheocracy is speaking of the real, practical world.

I can't remember exactly what the deal was with Wages, but I've worked with other bands and here's what I've seen as a common scenario: the band writes 10+ songs for an upcoming album. As they record, re-work, and continue to fiddle with those songs, they narrow down to the 10 (or so) that are the strongest material and end up on the album. The other songs are written, but left in various states of progress. Some songs will finish their creation process later and appear on a later album. Some will never see the light of day.

What often happens when a Japanese track is needed is that the band dusts off one of the ones that didn't make the cut and they finish the process of making it a worthy and release-able song.

I often tell people to stop freaking out about not being able to hear the Japanese songs because typically, you're not missing out on a band's best material. Often you're hearing what the band considered to be the second-tier songs that they created. I realize that there are tons of exceptions to that (and many fans consider Wages their favorite Theocracy song).

Yes and that's where I agree with you. If the material is second-tier as you've put it then we really shouldn't be able to listen to them until the band decides to do so without being forced to do it to make a buck.

What I mean is we definitely should not thank the Japanese market situation for the bonus tracks, rather blame them for ruining the equilibrium envisioned by Matt and the gang.

I could have sworn I read somewhere that Wages of Sin was originally supposed to be part of Mirror of Souls, but I think someone posted in another topic that it wasn't, so I'm not sure anymore. :(

Yeah, Wages is definitely not second-rate stuff. :D

I'm wondering exactly why albums are so much more expensive in Japan. Is it something with the Japanese music industry or is it just that everything's expensive over there?

I just thought of something. Do Japanese bands have to put bonus tracks on their albums to help sell them in their own country? Because that would be funny (and a bit sad).

Hey gang, FYI, do not discuss illegally downloading music here. This is the band's *official* forum. We do everything in our power to prevent their music from being illegally downloaded. We realize that there's only so much we can do in the digital world, but we still put forth our best effort.

I'm not going to allow any posts that talk about how to do it or having done it successfully. Same things goes for YouTube (I can't believe the number of people who come onto the Ulterium Records-loaded videos and say "anyone know where I can download this album for free?") :bah:

I do realize that most of you on here are the kind of diehard fans who will buy it later, but others who are lurkers are more likely to follow your lead and then never buy it.

I was just curious if it was available on something legal like iTunes or something. Kind of like Wages of Sin is now. I am not a crook! ;)
