its my anniversary

Yeah.
I know GR's a decent guy.
But a number of our troops have kinda disgraced our country.

Well, this isn't fucking Vietnam. You get court marshaled if you accidentally kill an innocent or unarmed man. The soldiers over there live with that constantly. So if you shoot because one of them comes running out screaming at you during a mission, you go to jail. It happened to one of my dad's friends when he was over there, but they eventually let him off.

yeah, youre a vet really quick. i cant get out yet though. 2 more years on the enlistment. not like i planned on getting out anyways

War is itself fundamentally flawed.

Well, this just opens up a whole new debate that I'm not sure we want to get into; but war is hell, I'll give you that.

Yeah.

They've been through and witnessed more than we can imagine. I don't blame the torturers of Abu-Ghraib so much as I blame the intoxicating and mind-numbing effects of war. The soldiers cannot be held responsible for what psychological and sociological damage has been done to them. And then there's the chain of command to consider.

And just for future reference guys, it's pretty much never appropriate to ask a soldier if he/she has ever killed anyone. I spoke personally with a soldier who came to visit my high school once. He said that's one question that you never ask a soldier.

and a question none will answer truthfully

Yeah, I'm not saying that every dead Iraqi citizen is the victim of ruthless slaughter by our troops. I'm saying a small number of the troops have done some shit they really shouldn't have.

I've read The Things They Carried too :Smug:
Anyhow...I do hold them responsible. Sorry, but people need to be held responsible for their actions. If they'd beaten up one prisoner once I'd say "Okay, I see how that could happen, it's not a good thing but it's not entirely their fault"
But what they did at Abu Ghraib? I completely blame them. Plenty of other soldiers have gone to war and (getting lame here) done our country proud. Behaved with honor and dignity. If they can do it, I think a bunch of prison guards can.

EDIT: sorry for fucking up your thread, GR

I understand you. Just a difference of opinion.

In war the line between right and wrong becomes infinitely blurred and skewed. Some soldiers probably thought what they did at Abu Ghraib honestly was right, and even that the American people would cheer them on. But the mindsets of those here at the homefront and those amidst the battle often differ, although our government would have us believe otherwise. Typical moral boundaries become dissolved in war. The human conscience that would normally tell soldiers to stop can't comprehend the magnitude of or reason for all that they've seen. War makes a Septimus Smith of all soldiers. Some people are better able to suppress the insanity; others aren't. I don't blame them because I can't even begin to imagine what it feels like to be in their position.

That's my opinion.

Oh noes GR gunna come kill me with nasal spray.

Tangent: I just saw an ad for Advair or whatever, it's an asthma medicine that can cause asthma related death. That makes sense. I totally want to treat my illness with something that can make it bad enough to kill me.

(I don't have asthma)
