Why is it that the smell of other people's poo is significantly more offensive then your own?

Maybe it's tied to some kind of paternal/maternal instinct, kind of like how people with ugly kids never will admit outright that their children look awful.

it's an instinct of assessment. we're wired to subconsciously gauge our health by the smell of our excretions, which is why sometimes people are like "i love the smell of my farts aahaha!". animals do it too, i think.

I used to laugh when someone would tell me that they're not bothered by the smell of their own excrement, but I've found it's more bearable than the lingering stench of whoever you share your bathroom with (or even worse a public toilet).
