my friend who went to the art academy in chicago did a series of portraits of WWI (i think it was WWI, not WWII) combat victims sort of similar to that dog in the suit portrait. they were seated, in a uniform or suit, but had horrible disfigurations from bombs, etc. I think one guy even had his head completely blown off. they were really interesting, and full sized portraits (probably like 4'x3') with an oversized centerpiece of Mary (i believe it was Mary) with her hands up in disgust.
