My dad is a real outdoorsman type guy and is always climbing mountains, kayaking, etc. and I am often with him. I enjoy doing all this stuff with other people but I think soon I'm going to set up my pack and just march off into the wilderness for a few days. Its illegal around these parts to just camp out wherever you please on nature-reserve property, but realy there are barely any rangers to enforce it, especially during the night time. I think it would be great, and hopfully I will have a digi-cam soon to document some cool journeys.

Haha, most animals around here are to scared to attack, because they are in the vicinity of urban areas and have grown up learning their lessons.

Yeah I do solo hikes and camping trips, though not as much as I should/like to. Makes you feel like a fucking man.

I think the most important thing is to keep a good sense of direction, and make sure you have enough fluids to live in case that fails you. Everything else comes secondary.

There's some placed around here that's a small part of the Angeles National Forest. Nothing to special. Reign in Acai tried to kill us by attempting to convince to slide down some 70ft pipe that connected to some waterfall thing.

Speaking of all this, I'm looking for a smith that makes fine bowie knives, does anyone have any experience with any? Plenty make show-piece bowie knives, but I'm looking for a very good utility one to actual use.

Talk to lizard, he's an avid blade collector.

Check out my new hiking boots, haven't even broken them in yet:

Nice ones.

I'm stubborn and like to use my boots for hiking, and they serve me well so far. My dad gives me a hard time as hes all about hiking equiptment, cutting weight, etc etc. (ie: he hates cotton with a passion, haha). We jokingly but heads about that sort of stuff, I hike in logging boots, jeans, and flannel shirt, with aluminum cans of beans in my pack. He hikes in hiking boots, nylon pants, nylon shirt, with freeze dried food in his pack, hah.

Yeah, my friend has all that lightweight shit and pro equipment, whereas I've been hiking in my Doc Martens for 5 years now. :loco:

I do have a lightweight backpack (a real one, not some Jansport) and some equipment now, my collection is slowly building. I'm trying to get back into shape now so I can go on regular hikes this summer without getting my ass kicked.

haha, one hike I took with my chick-at-the-time was in August in Joshua Tree, in near triple digit weather. We did an 8 miler (4 miles out, 4 miles back) and by mile 6 she was getting delusional and my ankles were bruising. Couldn't walk for a few days afterwards, haha. Good times. :D

Speaking of knives again + a short trail story:

I am such an advocate of knives on the trail. Before I went down the alagash I stopped into a general store and got a cheap-o knife just in case. Long story short, we got the first camping spot, beached our kayaks, explored a bit, then went to set up the tent...and we had forgotten our tent-poles. Now, my pops got a little bit irate at this to say the least, so I got to thinking of how to get through this. So, I used the knife to chop down some sapplings and carve then as smooth as possible, and used them as tent-poles. If I had'nt gotten a knife for the trail we would have been mondo fucked.

Shortly after my dad dropped his paddle in some rapids and again was pretty upset about that, haha, but after some short thinking I split my paddle in half (they where the aluminum ones that connect in the middle with a button) and we both rowed our kayaks like canoes untill we found his paddle in the bank. All this stuff made the trip more interesting as it made it semi-important to make good time, or at least gave me an excuse to let my imagination become a little over-active, maybe making it into more of a survivor-adventure then it really was =P.

Haha, yea I usually snag my pops's spare equiptment when we go out for some epic journeys.

First time I went camping alone was in Aridzona, I was driving through some mountains and was getting sleepy, so found a campsite and set up my shit. Didn't have anything to start a fire with, so I found some random logs and dried up pine needles, used my Bic to get it started. Sat there and read The Name of the Rose for a spell, then slept with my huge knife at my side to ward of bears, haha.

Woke up in the morning with a new lease on manliness, packed up, and as I drove down the hill I realized why it was a bit nippy that evening: I was at 7600 feet above sea level. :loco:

tully, go to http://www.coldsteel.com/fixed-blades.html and check out those bad boys!

edit: watch the video with this one. http://www.coldsteel.com/38ck.html
theres vids for alot of em. I have the dvd that goes through all their knives and its awesome. I recently got a 3" folder from them and its solid as hell.

Cool, but still all stainless steel blades from what I saw, I'm looking for carbon steel methinks. Although it does remind me that I may go for a Khukri over a Bowie, but I'm not sure...both are good options.
