I'm trying to remember.. is the macaulay culkin kid dead before Tim Robbins goes to war, or is the kid's death just part of his death-vision? Or, did the kid even exist at all?

If I remember right his parents left him home and then some robbers tried to rob the house but he put a bunch of traps in the house to stop them and eventually the robbers got arrested and went to jail and the kid was alright.
