Joey Sturgis style drum samples?

Hi, firstly i'll introduce myself. Im Alex and i'm an amateur producer/engineer from the UK. Due to money and the fact that i'm a student, contemporary recording doesn't happen a lot for me, so the recording methods i use may be slightly different to most people on here. I like to record live acoustic drums, but then run the signals through a sample replacement afterwords to give a much more beefier sound (bad room, basically only using the live mics for the signals alone so i don't spend hours on a piano roll...)

I DI my guitars and use impulses so that is great, but i always seem to struggle with my drums.

I'm after huge sounding drums (refering mainly to Emmure here) Kick drums, which are more defined in the sub ranges (40-70hz) and snares which have such 'slingshot' attack on them but also have a huge body sound to them, as well as a defined toppy sound.

I have listened to Joeys own samples which he is selling on his site, and quite frankly, i think they are quite weak and not useable (IMO, please don't flame, lol) I understand that sample replacing and DI'ing sort of reduces the feel of things, but the bottom line is this: I do not have the rooms, money, equipment and time to do full, audio analogue recordings.

Does anybody have any drum samples that you think will suit what i'm after?

I've heard some of the StevenSlateDrum samples on his site, but wasn't 100% sure on them. I heard 'Metal Dream Kit' or something similar and thought it wouldn't really work, it's got a Nevermore vibe to it, imo and didn't really think it would suit. I listened to the Deftones kit too and thought it sounds nothing what so ever like Deftones drum sound either, so on the basis of those two, i got steered away...

Let's put it like this...

Joey uses his own and Slate's samples.

So yeah, if you want Emmure's drum sounds, those would be a good place to start.

Don't forget, just having those samples won't magically turn your drum tracks awesome. There's a lot more into making awesome mixes.

Ok guy, thanks for the feedback. Maybe the samples themselves isn't really the source of the issue i am after... Out of curiosity, what are your own - personal preferences to mixing/tracking drums. Do you send them all to a bus etc and use soft units, or hardware units etc. Maybe add overall kit overdrive/a little distortion and put it quite quiet to bring punch to the kit? I find that i can get a nice drum sound but most of the time, it doesn't sound clear... It sounds quite muddy not pristine and sort of like holding a thin sheet of paper between my ears and the speaker, if that makes sense?

Why is everyone so crazy about Joey Sturgis? I have just checked the list of bands that he has produced and I've never ever heard any of them, but, by their names alone, I can tell that they are deathcore/metalcore/crapcore. I mean, I am sure that he is a good producer, but why the huge devotion to his stuff, there are a lot of producers out there who are as good.

[Wild Speculation] Perhaps its just that the kind of music he works on tends to inspire rabid devotion in its young fan-base, along with a sort of "me too"-ism that inspires anyone with access to the computer in their parents living-room to want to be a metalcore producer.They never produce anything of worth, but it sure is a great line for getting laid, which is what really matters right?

Not that it's really a bad thing, when i was a youngster it was listening to Mayhem and Darkthrone that inspired me to buy some cheap mics and start recording.

I'll tell you why he is so popular in the Forum.

Emmure's new album: Speaker of the Dead came out today (in the UK anyway). Take a listen to the tracks on this album. that is raw power and modern crisp sound. Most dick head old schoolers would say 'you'll never get a great sound in digital, let alone by sampling drums or DI'ing guitar'

This guy is a mesiah because he did what old school producers/engineers said wasn't possible and it actually gives people like us hope because he has even stated he barely uses any fancy stuff, just time and effort. Time and effort I can afford. Outboard units, hardware comps and hardware effects and then guitar gear like £2000 heads and £1000 cabs, then £2000 drum kits and £2000 worth of cymbals I cannot afford.

The guy is in his late 20's I believe? and has put his faith in the digital age and his mixes that, lets just say carry a huge FUCK YOU to all the wankers out there that put you down at the first hurdle. That say, 'No, don't replace those kicks and snares, are you mad? it'll only ever sound good if you get top class mics on top class kit and use the recording you are given' < Granted all of his samples are done this way, but he merely just adds them to his sound banks and replaces afterwords, Just like Slates drums.
