Johan: Hello welcome to Red Rooster how may I help you.

Customer: umm Ill have some wings.....umm. and some fries......werent you in Opeth?

Johan: yea

Customer: There like famous now and shit.....

Johan: yea......

Yaya, except you forgot:

(*** CRUNCH *** sounds of Johan crushing in customers skull with old Yamaha POS bass he had laying around, for bringing it up for the 48th time that day...)

...at least now i know why you keep that stupid signature: to remind you of the only piece of opeth history worth knowing..and it's probably not even true

tehleper: they had been playing them WITH johan

..oh forget it :erk:

i'm pretty sure mikael only played bass on MAYH.

i think the bass on Morningrise is awesome, and it would've been interesting to see how Johan evolved with the band if he was still in Opeth, as someone said earlier.

mh, but no one ever seen it saying it, except for very few ppl like you. i don't know if he played bass on morningrise or not...but it would be rather cool if mikael could play that way. it doesnt sound like his playing tho...i might be wrong anyway...

Exactly. The bass on MAYH is so basic and easy, yet the bass on Morningrise is very complex and often leading a certain riff. Why would he switch styles so much in his own bass playing? Si it coincidence that a bass player leaving before MAYH and the basslines on MAYH being so basic? I think not.

The bass is actually one of the major reason Morningrise is one of my least favourite Opeth albums. It's not as bad on Orchid, but I feel certain songs (especially TBYF) were ruined by the sound of the bass.

The bass sound isn't bassy enough imo on morngrise.. tbh.. i think the drums and the bass sound shite on morningrise.. The drums sound very much like a drum machine.. its seems there's only two different cymbal sounds which really gets to me lol.. However it's still a brilliant album. I generally love the basslines but Mendez' approach is much more the style and sound i like.

I think so. Musicians are changing their style all the time.

shut up

Uhm. And why does Mikael always say they arent going back to the morningrise style, which would include the great bassplaying? I think he thoguht the same when they recorded MAYH and he wanted to keep it basic. Jesus. What a pathetic logic. Wait, hoglan probably drummed on deliverance because it was faster than the drumming on Blackwater Park. :/

Couldnt agree more about the drums, i think the whole rhythm section on that album sounds horrible.

On the issue at hand, i dont have too many problems with Faralla's playing, but there are the occasional examples which make me glad he not in the band anymore (the infamous Advent 9:00 bassline, and the less infamous Advent 4:10 - 4:20 bass line). I think if the bass had a better tone and better mixing on that album it wouldnt be so bad. As for Orchid, ive never had any problems bass-wise

The thing that was said before, was that Mike wrote most of the basslines on Orchid & Morningrise, but did not played them. However, I praise those albums and for me, those are the best Opeth-albums ever recorded.

some say johann's style didn't fit in with the first two albums, some say it was sublime. Mendez, nobody seems to have an opinion on really, referred to oh so often as "bass player". Imo i think that johan who did bass on morningrise and orchid (says so in my sleeve notes anyway) is a far better player because he forged a unique sound, one that although divides opinion is unforgetable and i think it is very sensitive. Those who say it stuck out like a sore thumb, i say it does but its mainly a production thing, had it been treated correctly then it would have been beautiful, orchid and morningrise are not albums that want a "fat" sound, they are fragile pieces (take tnatsw) that a frail and delicate, a sound augmented by the bass lines.
