Jorn's Dio Tribute

I will appreaciate any of the efforts made by fellow musicians in thier tributes and manor of dealing with this. Paying respect and honour....

Something seems a little weird about this... Did they have this recorded already & were waiting for Dio to pass before they released it? Or is it just how things happened to work out? This project must have been in the works for a while, not something that was just conceived last week.

I think it quite possible for professional musicians that have nothing to do but play music all day to sit right down immeadiatly and write a song and learn or relearn a bunch of covers. Theres always statements made here and there about various songs that came together in a couple hours in the studio. Experienced gig bands can put together full sets within a couple of months just getting together for a few hours two nights a week.

Apparently the release date had been set a few months ago and of course the music was finished way before Dio's passing. Why there's no mention of it in the press release however is strange and to the uninitiated it might indeed give the impression of Jorn as a bit of an opportunist (which I have a hard time believing). Poor judgement on Frontiers Records' side, I'd say.

Here's the cover art btw:

Maybe... but he's already got the track listing worked out, the record distribution lined up, cover art, a video.

The "Song For Ronnie James" is a decent song, nothing astounding but lyrically nostalgic given the events of the past week.

However, something about the guitar tone is driving me insane. Non-guitarists on this forum probably won't get my gripe as it sounds okay, but it sounds very "digital". When they hold the chord around 2:35 listen to how badly it "fizzes" and distorts. Basically, it sounds like rather than miking an amp, they just plugged in the "line out" on a Line 6 Spider.

The production is good, mix is solid, song is good, but that tone is like a distracting rust spot on a mint Iroc Z.

It is a little buzzy, but it has always sounded like that, at least since the other Jorn left Lande's band. I wasn't crewing for Prog Power when they played last, but I could ask one of the other techs if they remember what he played through....

It already has earned some bad rep:

It's been said that the contract for the CD had been signed together with "Spirit Black" in early 2009. so that makes it at least 6 months before even Dio himself realised he had cancer...But I think the only way to assure everyone his intentions were clean would be to give all proceedings to Dio's charity funds. Otherwise it's easy to see it as a way of milking Dio's legend before he even cooled down with this rushed video release and CD announcement...

I'm not sure what to think of it really...

I posed this question over on the PPUSA board, and I'll shoot it out here, as well (not a personal attack on ANYONE, but maybe a little bit of one in a general sort of way)

Just what has the IMC (Internet Music Comittee /sarcasm) decided would be a good amount of time? A week, a month, a year? I'm a Jorn fan, but I'm really not trying to let that come into play here. There is NO way this was thrown together as a last minutue cash in on Dio's death. There was someone at the PPUSA forum who said this tribute has been planned possibly as early as 2008. I see it as a living tibute from a guy who is probably influenced by Dio, but for sure holds him in high regard. Coincidences DO happen, I mean, look at DT's relase of Live Scenes with the burning towers on the original artwork. I DO agree that it opens the door to scrutiny, but I see it at worst as questionable timing, but no way is it a quick cash in, IMHFO, anyway...

You guys should have given them the Dual Recto you had @ PPUSA last year to record with :)

We had 2, one blew up on Saturday, IIRC, can't remember during which set. I do know I was QUITE mad at myself for not having a 3A slow blow fuse in my bag.....That's why we have 2! ;)
you know, as much of a tube guy as I am, those Line 6 HD147s sound pretty damn good, too....

Edit: It was Friday, because we were only able to get one of the Line 6/Bogner hybrids, which imo, sounded better than the 147s, but weren't as versatile...

This is exactly what I was thinking second time through the song and after the few posts said it was in the planing. I believe it was a living tribute. Theres the part in the vid where Jorn winks, I dont believe he had any notion Dio would be gone when they shot that.
