It's taken from a WWII book, a "joy division" was a Nazi internment camp where the Jewish women were forced to perform sexual favors on the soldiers.Random Beard said:The name is gay enough to keep me away.

Joy Division is probably the most depressing band ever (imo). They are supposed to be part of this .. "dark wave" scene of the late 70s early 80s, but their sound was quite unique to put them in a specific genre. Just melodic rock with "to cut your wrists" melodies and really depressing atmosphere. Ian Curtis (the singer) always sings like he is in the edge of a suicide attempt, and finally he made it (and it was a successfull one too). His lyrics were painfully sincere too, amazing lyrics really. "Closer" is highly recommended, download "Decades" (the song) first to get a good picture of what i mean.

Its not that unusual to sense RADIOHEAD similarities throughout SWANS, who themselves idolized JOY DIVISION whilst playing the NYC underground circuit throughout the 80s. And of course, the musical connection between bands like JOY DIVISION and RADIOHEAD is obvious, so it all becomes rather incestuous after a while. (Im not familiar with earlier SWANS work, but their albums like Love of Life and The Great Annihilator could have easily emerged from the sounds of late 80s/early 90s Manchester, England, although I was pleasantly surprised to learn that SWANS are from New York City.)
