Joy Division

It's taken from a WWII book, a "joy division" was a Nazi internment camp where the Jewish women were forced to perform sexual favors on the soldiers.

That's about as kickass as it is evil, not exactly gay.

Joy Division is probably the most depressing band ever (imo). They are supposed to be part of this .. "dark wave" scene of the late 70s early 80s, but their sound was quite unique to put them in a specific genre. Just melodic rock with "to cut your wrists" melodies and really depressing atmosphere. Ian Curtis (the singer) always sings like he is in the edge of a suicide attempt, and finally he made it (and it was a successfull one too). His lyrics were painfully sincere too, amazing lyrics really. "Closer" is highly recommended, download "Decades" (the song) first to get a good picture of what i mean.

most of the time when someone doesn't know Joy Divison, i mention the first crow soundtrack the song "dead souls" that The Cure performed. That's a Joy Division cover. After the singer died the rest of the band went on in the 80's to form New Order which was quite popular.

The CD "Still" has some of their best songs though.

He couldnt have said it any better. Ian Curtis sounds like a suicidal Jim Morrison. They arent the most talented band with each of their respective insturments, but that really doesnt matter as they are able to create such intoxicating atmosphere.

Always has been one of my favorite bands. They only really had three albums: Closer ( the best), Unknown Pleasures (2nd best), and Still (good)

Oh and if NAD likes the angst of Nirvana, he should find Joy division make Kurt CObain seem happy.

Holy shit you guys have totally sold me on these dudes, even spaffe's comment because Depeche Mode fucking rule. No download, no sample, no. When I go pick up the new Queens on Tuesday, Joy Division is coming home with me as well.

Long ago yes, and I love it thusly. You make a JD reference I take it? Yes yes, muchly thusly yes.

Love of Life is probably my favorite Swans album. The Sound of Freedom is definitely my favorite Swans song though. UNRULY.

Yeah....

Another song worth pointing out is “The Other Side of the World”. Think RADIOHEAD’s “Sulk” from The Bends. It’s not that unusual to sense RADIOHEAD similarities throughout SWANS, who themselves idolized JOY DIVISION whilst playing the NYC underground circuit throughout the 80’s. And of course, the musical connection between bands like JOY DIVISION and RADIOHEAD is obvious, so it all becomes rather incestuous after a while. (I’m not familiar with earlier SWANS work, but their albums like Love of Life and The Great Annihilator could have easily emerged from the sounds of late 80’s/early 90’s Manchester, England, although I was pleasantly surprised to learn that SWANS are from New York City.)

Oh yeah, Swans is one of those bands that I'm going to enjoy taking my time with. There is no way I'm going to do them the disservice of getting 'too much, too soon'. Let's face it, one Swans album can last you a year.

By the way, just for the love of goat do two things for me: (1) Watch trainspotting (and then listen to "Love of Life" again), and (2) listen to the Meads CD-R today because it's a Sunday.

It was NIN that covered the Joy Division track for the Crow ST. The Cure's song, Burn, was an original :)

Ah okay, I get it now. I don't really remember the Cure's song on that soundtrack, but I do remember NIN's contribution.

I have 10 Swans discs, and although I've dedicated many hours in listening to those, there is still very much left to discover on what I have. Honestly I don't really need anymore, but in the coming years I'm sure to complete the massive discography, along with groups like Pink Floyd and King Crimson.

Awesome soundtrack, awesome movie.

Although "Big Emtpy" by STP is way overplayed on the radio here.

Still cannot believe Brandon Lee died during the making of that. It's a fucken triad conspiracy I tell ya.
