Does it really matter when she won? Your question when Nailz said Carrie Underwood was "out of how many other winners and finalists".
Of course it matters. 10 years ago, sales figures were much much higher than they are now. If you're a pop artist on a major label getting major label marketing, etc 23 million sales in 10 years is an absolute disaster. In fact, it probably costs more money to put on an entire season of American Idol than the amount of money Kelly Clarkson's debut album grossed in its first 5 years.
And to your point that no one buys music from the shows contestants I think you're setting the expectation level too high. Those numbers are quite impressive by any standard.
If you interpret "no one buys music from the show's contestants" as literal, I don't know what to tell you man. Of course people are going to buy it, but no those numbers are pretty awful considering how many tens of millions of people watch show. If I'm not mistaken, Idol gets more viewers now than Presidential debates. 4 million units sold then is a disaster.
There are tons more pop acts doing better than Idol winners/finalists, whatever in terms of sales and concert attendence besides Lady Gaga. I just gave you an example of Gaga versus the "best selling idol winner" Kelly Clarkson.Of course they aren't Lady Gaga numbers, she at the absolute top of her genre at the moment. No one is producing those numbers these days so it's not really a fair comparison.
