Judas Priest Debut New Guitarrist on American Idol

Does it really matter when she won? Your question when Nailz said Carrie Underwood was "out of how many other winners and finalists".

Of course it matters. 10 years ago, sales figures were much much higher than they are now. If you're a pop artist on a major label getting major label marketing, etc 23 million sales in 10 years is an absolute disaster. In fact, it probably costs more money to put on an entire season of American Idol than the amount of money Kelly Clarkson's debut album grossed in its first 5 years.

And to your point that no one buys music from the shows contestants I think you're setting the expectation level too high. Those numbers are quite impressive by any standard.

If you interpret "no one buys music from the show's contestants" as literal, I don't know what to tell you man. Of course people are going to buy it, but no those numbers are pretty awful considering how many tens of millions of people watch show. If I'm not mistaken, Idol gets more viewers now than Presidential debates. 4 million units sold then is a disaster.

Of course they aren't Lady Gaga numbers, she at the absolute top of her genre at the moment. No one is producing those numbers these days so it's not really a fair comparison.
There are tons more pop acts doing better than Idol winners/finalists, whatever in terms of sales and concert attendence besides Lady Gaga. I just gave you an example of Gaga versus the "best selling idol winner" Kelly Clarkson.

Also I don't consider Carrie Underwood a "disaster" because she doesn't do pop, she's in country, and for country her sales numbers have broken records in the genre. But that's an exception to the rule.

So because you didn't like one album of theirs, you don't care? An album that (while I enjoyed it personally) was totally different than anything else they have done? Not to mention that they said they didn't want to end on an album like that and that's why they're doing another album in the Priest vein? Umm...okay?

No, I don't care. If a new record comes out and I listen to it and I am surprised, I will change my mind and will care. We're human beings with the ability to do that you know. lol

I know that. It just to me, seems a little silly to write a band off after one album (that obviously was a huge experiment). That's all.

Where did I write them off? I even explicitly said that I'm ambivalent. I have no opinion at all, I don't care. Writing them off implies strong feelings.

Yeah I hated Nostradamus, but I really don't have any expectations at all for the next album. If it blows me away so be it. If it doesn't, it doesn't.

Before we derail this thread any longer I suggest you read Clarkson's wikipedia page. Her accomplishments are quite impressive for any artist in any genre. For the record her debut came out in 2003 and she has released 4 albums total, that's almost 6 million sold per album average. I don't know what universe you dwell in but that's success at a very high level.

Also for the record Daughtry's music is not pop but more along the lines of Nickelback. So 4 million sold for a debut is also phenomenal.

The funny thing is I don't even watch the show or like their music so I have no idea why I'm defending them

On another note I liked the new guitarist. As a guitar player myself the first thing I noticed was how much clearer and better sounding his tone was compared to KK. Especially on the Breaking The Law solo. One thing that has always bugged me about KK is how overprocessed his guitar sound is.

You know, I think with Halford the teleprompter thing was initially used as a guideline but it's sort of like when certain people write out a speech that they know by heart, they get obsessed with looking at it.

When I saw Priest on the recent "do all of British Steel" tour, Rob clearly knew all the 'old standards' but used a teleprompter for the more obscure BS songs. While it limited his stage-movement during those songs, I didn't really have a problem with it. After all, he probably won't need to sing those particular songs again.

I don't understand how people can question Judas Priest going on without KK, when Priest went on without Halford.

I was waiting for someone to say that.. but it still sounds a bit harsh!

Look, you put yourself up for it by claiming that AI is a big scam and you should know because you didn't make it through the auditions.

There are only 2 ways we can look at this:
1) you're right, AI is a big scam
2) you're wrong and apparently just not good enough to make it through the auditions

Well, I already said later that I didn't think it was a scam..

EDIT: Wow, I just realized how bitter I sounded.. lol I'm sorry, I don't think American Idol is a "scam". The audition process just soured me on the show, is all.

..and then I explained my experiences.. I never meant to make it sound like I was so arrogant that my not making it through the auditions (that I couldn't get to, because of the stampede!) suddenly made the entire show a scam. Come on, my ego isn't that big!

JUDAS PRIEST Frontman Calls JAMES DURBIN 'Idol' Cover 'Dream Come True'

"Because we've lived so long and done so much stuff in heavy metal and we've seen so many crazy things and heard so many crazy things, when we heard this we went, 'Fuck! That's incredible, man. Let's do it, you know? This is insane. That's just amazing,'" frontman Rob Halford explained of their reaction to getting "Idol" exposure. "So as it progressed from 'Another Thing Coming' 'till this point now, when we're on the carpet and we're about to do the show, it's just a dream come true for PRIEST, for metal and, mostly, for James Durbin"

Just watch... Durbin will put together a little solo band, kind of like Ari did in Europe, and they will actually land a gig or two with Priest....

Nevermind.....It's 31 Year old Richie Faulkner. Apparently he played with Lauren Harris and Pretty Maids.

I don't know about his Lauren Harris gig but he surely never played with Pretty Maids.
He did play on the DEEDS-Blown album from 2002 (which was the band DIRTY DEEDS who released 2 albums before, including the great first one in 1998, Danger Of Infection, that changed their name for that 3rd album).

Well...I don't understand how people can accept Priest going on without KK...it's easy to play this game:heh:
To me (and probably many others) Glenn and KK were, are, and will always be, the heart and soul of Judas Priest.....without either one, it's just not the same. What's one of the first things you hear when someone describes Priest....? They were one of the first metal bands to use a guitar duo....Glenn and KK. Split them up, and the magic is gone.
