just had a band ask me "where I went to school for recording" ...

I don't know about anywhere else in the country but around here we have "the new england institute of art"

also known as the new england institute of give me $80,000 and we give you nothing in return.

but you are right I guess I shouldn't call them morons... it just gets aggravating. it's frustrating to me that people think you can learn this stuff from a school. perhaps the engineering stuff you can, but when it comes to producing/writing/etc I feel like you either have it in you or you don't.

Ive got a dastardly plan. We will now charge 80,000 dollars admission for the andy sneap forum- 60% goes to Andy, 10% to Kev, 10% to Öwen, 10% to Pipaguapique and 10% to Clowd :p

haha seriously though, I truly believe you can learn more on this forum in 6 months than from that damn school in 4 years.

well, I've been meaning to ask some of ya'll about this topic. I'm 28 years old and I made the horrible decision 11 years ago to drop out of highschool. Yes, it was one of the dumbest things I could have done. At the time, I just didnt care. 8-10 years later....it really hits me how I've basically wasted 10 years of my life not getting a GED and not pursuing my "goals"....but this was because I never had a goal, besides play in a band and go somewhere with it. Now, I realize that I really do love the production aspect and I geek out over it. I dont really know what else I'd LOVE to do daily as a job. I gave school a thought, but it seems that 90% of you here basically learned on your own, hands on, etc.

Can anyone give me some advice on this topic? Should I just try to find a local studio and see if they can take me under their wing and teach me the ropes?

don't go to school for this. PERIOD. read that anthony bourdain article someone posted here the other day, should be a few posts down - it's about chefs but it applies the same way to this. if you want to go to school then go to school for something you can actually get a job with. (this isn't to say you can't make a living with this, but for the most part you pretty much have to do it on your own, at least where I'm from)

also, the GED test is the most retardedly easy test you will ever take in your life, just go take it if you feel guilty about not having it.

I hear the GED is easy, but the practice tests FUCK me with algebra and geometry. I'm going to be getting a book to read up on before I actually go and take the test. Or I can just get that Mesa cab and not worry about another thing ever again. :muahaha:

one thing those kind of shools provide is gear, that normally you maybe couldnt use or learn how to use.
But you still have to learn a lot by yourself if you are on such kind of shools still, its not like they hand you everything

+1 million. I ended up getting my GED so easy. I walked in, said I don't want any practice, I just wanna take it and they let me. I got a 95% on every part.

Question 1

1.how do you open a door?
A. Turn the handle and push
B. You don't
C. What is a door?
D. You have to be smarter than the door

seriously

And then when you get out of school and actually need to start working that kind of stuff isn't of much use, having to go back down to using a firepod and whatever mics you can afford and trying to get the very most out of them.

that's the other side, but at least you would know how to use it ;)

so true haha, and same here - they kept trying to convince me to take the practice and stuff. I didn't even study or worry about it before I took it.

my boss at the time wanted me to go to the like "graduation" ceremony or whatever(at least he meant well), and I was actually taken aback. there were people giving speeches and crying and shit talking about how hard they studied... it wasn't even funny. I couldn't believe it.

i think AE school actually reduces your odds of doing anything audio related, because it shoves immeasurable amounts of useless information (sinewave math problems, the physics of a speaker moving in and out, etc.) that kids can't find interesting at first. WE could probably pay attention to shit like that for short amounts of time because we already know the fun stuff, but 19 year old dipshits that know nothing except it'd be cool to record shit...no.

ALSO, since these schools generally have SSL consoles and genelecs, they tend to fill kids heads with the false misconception that you can't accomplish anything without PT HD and 6 figures of analogue gear. i know TONS of kids (literally five off the top of my head) that went to the AE program at newengland institute of art and they're all...terrible and doing nothing now. except this one dude who gets intermittent contracting jobs for live sound, but seems to have no interest in recording bands.

mowell...AE school is total fail.
