Kick drum tuning. Never happy. Help?!

I've been using a Beta 91 for 7 or 8 years and it's an awesome kick mic. To Burny, it doesn't move around at all, there's enough weight that it'll just sit on a pillow or piece of foam inside the drum and do its job.

I've used the e901 as well but wasn't pleased with the sound, it was too plastic-y. The Beta 91 sounds more natural but still retains a ton of attack and isolation.

I really like the D6 as well.

So, we retuned all the skins, dampened as needed, mic'd up again, and I will say that it is probably the best raw drum sounds I/we've ever gotten.

Still far from "OMG, that sounds sick!!" though.....

I took samples as well and figured I could throw some clips up here. These are .mp3's but if anyone actually would like to use these for any reason, let me know and I can throw .wav's up.

Samples are just close mics only.

The kick still is a bit muddy sounding but we really did mess with it a bunch. Still has that shit batter head on it so that, combined with the mic, is probably really holding things back. I really do enjoy the D6 clips I've heard and need to get one! And thanks for the offer, Jason! But we are on opposite sides of the continent.
