Kick or snare, which one should be louder?

Hi,
pretty much like the title says. What should be louder, or should I keep them at almost the same levels?
And what should be louder during blast beats?

I've come to the conclusion that people tend to mix the snare a tad louder than the rest of the kit. That being said, it's not set in stone that it _should_ be that way.

Probably the snare, although I've never really thought about it in that context. IMO, the kick sounds better a bit further back, and with the way kicks are typically mixed in metal (really dry), it's best to keep it back and not draw attention to that lack of ambiance, because it grates on the ears quickly.

Ask that to the mix! Where are pockets in rest mix and character of snare/ kick dictates the volume. Ask yourself - is it enough loud or it's too loud!

I *try* to aim for a slightly louder snare over kick. Though, I think my ears and brain deceive me and tend to notice that my kicks are almost always a bit too loud after taking a break from mixing.

Really depends on the song/arrangement/part of the song. Automate!
