i know most people don't like KISS in here, but i thought it strange that a pop band (whom i actually really enjoy) THE ACADEMY IS...are opening up this coming tour.

now, that i am typing this out it makes more sense. i bet they are trying to make KISS more appealing to a younger audience so it can be a more "family affair."

I LOVE KISS.

Never even heard of The Academy Is.

I know one time I saw KISS Econoline Crush opened, who were a one hit wonder in the 90s.

Nothing beats though when the MELVINS opened!

It's happened before. On their reunion tour in 1996, The Verve Pipe opened for them. They had the hit song "The Freshmen".

The Verve Pipe are awesome been a fan since the first time i heard them on the Aware V1 CD. That song at the end of the movie Rock Star was written and performed by TVP, plus the singer is in one of the cover bands in the movie. i cannot remember whose, but i think mark wahlberg's (aka, Blood Pollution, right?)

The singer of Third Eye Blind was in the rival cover band in the movie Rock Star. Is that who you are thinking of?

You want weird???? The early 90s were full of weird line-ups. Keep in mind we were in a recession.

I saw such oddball lineups as:

SISTERS OF MERCY / PUBLIC ENEMY / GANG OF FOUR / WARRIOR SOUL

NEIL YOUNG / SONIC YOUTH / SOCIAL DISTORTION

Was this an actual show or were they part of a larger bill at one of those all-encompassing fests? If it was a show with these four, then I agree that it's an oddball.

This was an actual tour package, not part of a bigger fest like Lollapalooza or anything. There were so many of these 4 band tours in the 90s.

Wasn't that when he was doing his heavier material though? Made a bit more sense. What's weird was my dad and I were just talking about that very tour yesterday as well as the tour he did with Soundgarden.

This is true. This was around the time when Neil was first hooking up with Pearl Jam and stuff. I didn't go, but I do recall the tour he did with Soundgarden. I believe Blind Melon were on that bill as well.

While I am not a fan or anything, I did watch about half of Neil Young's set, and he did rock pretty hard. He had (obviously fake) Marshall Stacks that literally almost touched the cieling of the arena!

They already were a family affair...4 generations of fans were at the 2004 show I was at...I think Gene is giving the teenage fans something that won't bore them (like some other 80s band probably would)...

no, the singer of TVP (Brian Vander Ark) is in the movie too.
from wikipedia:
Vander Ark has made also made appearances in a number of films, most notably as a bass player in "Rock Star" (2001) featuring Mark Wahlberg. The Vander Ark-penned song "Colorful" (from the Underneath album) is featured at the film's end.

Vander Ark is the one in the back.

funny thing i just noticed reading wikipedia is Myles Kennedy of The Mayfield Four, but more recently Alter Bridge is the dude Wahlberg pulls on stage at the end to replace him. haha, i never noticed that. that dude is a killer vocalist too.

Yeah, my dad and step mom were in the front at that show from what he tells me. It's also his reasoning in terms of why his hearing has gone bad.

weirdest pairing I ever saw (where I liked BOTH bands) was MSG opening for Molly Hatchet. I believe it was Beatin' The Odds (w/Jimmy Farrar on vox) tour, and the s/t (2nd) for MSG. There was some hate for the lineup from the metal heads as well as the rebel rocker contingent. I enjoyed the show!
