What does the future hold for Timo Kotipelto? Is he still in Stratovarius? Is he planning to release a new solo dic this year? Any info, please? Thanks!

He released "Serenity" in 2007. So my best guess is he'll either continue to work on his solo career, or become the bombastic frontman of some power metal supergroup, hopefully.

Thanks! I'll check out his new CD ASAP! I hope to see Timo K fronting a new band at PPUSA soon or else play the fest as KOTIPELTO! Hail!

Kotipelto really needs to get with a band. His solo projects are not power metal, he's more into a simpler classic metal style. It just doesn't suit him.

Personally, I'd love to see him and the old Sonata guitarist(his name escapes me) start a new band.

Not going to happen. One of the reasons Jani (amongst others) left Sonata is that he got tired of touring. Timo K. seems to like the road.

In December, Jani was the lead axeman for Paul Di'Anno's Finland tour, and he is also doing stuff with a Finnish-language rock band.

However, I do agree that Kotipelto's solo stuff does not really suit his voice. "Serenity", as a metal album (If you could possibly call it that) was almost unlistenable.

I thought Jani got kicked because he didn't take care of his military responsibilities in Finland

That was part of the reason. If you read the text of SA's public statement, it said that Jani refused to take seriously certain things. In a later interview, Jani stated that he was also tired of the road grind. Hence why he is doing Finnish-based projects.

I think everything Timo K. has done on his own beats the hell out of everything Stratovarius has done in that time.

Not power metal?????? His first solo release is as much power metal as Stratovarius is. The second one is more dark and brooding style. "Serenity" is also power metal. Are you sure you are talking about Timo Kotipelto not Timo Tolkkis solo discs?

Did I miss something? Is Kotipelto out of Stratovarius?

We really don't know the details but Timo Tolkki has stated the following:

o, here's is the latest chapter in the Stratovarius saga:

In the latest issue of Finland's Soundi magazine, STRATOVARIUS mainman Timo Tolkki reveals that he has formed a new band called REVOLUTION RENAISSANCE, which is believed to have been the working title of the now apparently aborted new STRATOVARIUS album. The group's debut CD — which will feature guest appearances by Michael Kiske (vocals; HELLOWEEN), Pasi Rantanen (vocals; THUNDERSTONE), Mirka Rantanen (drums; THUNDERSTONE), Pasi Heikkilä (bass; 45 DEGREE WOMAN) and Tobias Sammet (vocals; EDGUY) — is tentatively due this summer via Frontiers Records.

Says Tolkki: "The [REVOLUTION RENAISSANCE album]contains more or less 'Visions'-style [STRATOVARIUS' acclaimed 1997 release] power metal. It will come out pretty soon, maybe already in June. Michael Kiske, Pasi Rantanen, Mirka Rantanen, Pasi Heikkilä and Tobias Sammet have recorded their parts. But if there are any live performances, the lineup won't be the same. I have been thinking of asking JensJohansson, [STRATOVARIUS keyboardist] and LauriPorra, [STRATOVARIUS bassist] to join me for this."

Regarding the band's name, Timo said, "On the album, there's one song with this title, and Frontiers suggested it to be the band's name too. I thought it was good idea."

When asked if he will perform any STRATOVARIUS REVOLUTION RENAISSANCE, Tolkki replied, "Well, what do you think? Of course. I can play my songs with whomever I want."

I just love to hear Timo K sing, no matter if he's solo or with another band. As long as he's singing metal, I don't care what subgenre it is. Way to go, Timo! BTW, it was a real pleasure meeting him at PPUSA a few years back! Hail!:worship:

Agreed. I think Timo K is better right now on his own than he was over this current decade with Strato. 90s Strato was unbeatable, though.

I really liked Kotipelto's solo work as something different from Stratovarius. Sure it isn't groundbreaking or super-heavy power metal, but it certainly was metal and very entertaining. I especially liked hearing him do different things with his voice than always the high-pitched vocals that Tolkki wrote most often. Sure, I liked them too, but Kotipelto can do a lot more and I would really like to see him get hooked up with a side project, like an Advantasia/Space One sort of thing, or do vocals with another band, even if only as a guest (Thunderstone? That would be interesting.) I feel he's been pigeon-holed a bit by having the majority of his exposure being the voice of Stratovarius. I think if more people heard what he could do, he's get more offers for work, do more great music and also sell more of his solo work. The fact that it is compared mostly to Strato's stuff and heard by mostly heavy/power metal fans it does not get the recognition it deserves.

Anyway, you can read our review of Serenity here. You can request songs from it on our internet radio station and you can find a couple full songs on his Myspace page as well as some pretty good videos.

BEC did an interview with Timo when the album was released and he talked a great deal about what went into it. The interview was played on the radio twice, but you can read the transcript here.
