I was just browing youtube the other day when I ran into one of my favourite metal clips of old... Kreator's 'Betrayer'. It hit me right then and there that this was the snare sound I've been searching for. I know that I occassionally hear Kreator pull this sound (on the rockpalast bootleg for instance) but I have absolutely no idea what sort of snare it is, nor what treatment is being done to it.

If anyone can help out, in terms of listing some snare models as a starting point, that'd be fantastic.

Btw, the clip is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fw8VNA2e2Ro

I don't know what snare that is or anything, but I can get a similar sound from my drummer's Tama (it's a brass 14" x 5 1/2" I think) - on recordings I just scooping a couple of dbs around 300-400Hz, and it sounds pretty close to that. You have to be careful about killing the attack though, so you need the snare tuned right or it's impossible to get it to stand out.

2" tape for starters.

I think that I still remember all of the lyrics from "Betrayer".

Yea, me too. And all lyrics from the whole Extreme Aggressions and Terrible Certainty albums ... it's insane how long stuff gets stuck in your head when you listened to it religiously at a young age!

I remember being 14 and brainwashing my 3 year old sister with Kreator. She used to sit in front of the tv watching the video for Betrayor all day. Kreator...the heavy metal teletubbies.

Cool, I have that Rockpalast bootleg. Does anyone know if the drummer uses different snares for live and recording (especially on the recent albums)? Listening to the clip and Enemy of god, they don't sound very dissimilar. The EoG snare just sounds brighter to me, so they could be the same model drum.

Yeah. That seemed to be the biggest difference to me, the different verb/ room tone, and the EoG one being brighter while the Betrayer one was a bit more boxy/ duller. Unfortunately the Kretor website doesn't list Ventor's kit. It sais something in German which I can't understand.

It only says
"Equipment: anything I can hit"
