Layne Staley

no offense personally, but that's really kind of a dumb question. he was a heroin addict. that shit takes control of you and won't let go. he made the same mistake many have made before him and either got some bad stuff or shot up a little too much and he couldn't handle it. it's obvious that he was already weak before he died. in an interview not long before his death he was talking about losing teeth and shitting his pants because of loss of bowel control from his addiction. it was obviuos near the end that his trip was almost over.

Hey Greg: Hypothetically. What if your son went away to college, and developed a coke habit? Would you label him a "junkie" and shooo him away, or would you get him help?
of course you know the answer TD you were here when he said he'd let his son fry for killing someone. i'm sure greg would give his son a choice and try to help him if his son chose life. If he did OD and die he would have no one to blame but himself. there are choices you make that are final. I disagree when he says layne staley was a junkie piece of shit. he wrote some great music. But he made one of those choices that were final. He deserves respect for what he did while he was alive for people like me but i do not respect the fact that he made the choice to get hooked on heroine there are so many better alternatives. i don't care if anyone says "he was too far gone anyway" he fucked himself up.
and yeah you never called him a name as ZT whatever but you did make sexual comments about his son.

Well, I'm jumping back into this one cos I don't know if I put my point across well enough earlier.

For the record, I don't think it's a smart move for anyone to live for a drug, regardless of what that drug is. There are much more addictive drugs than heroin and more dangerous ones too.

It's all the knee-jerk no-brainer stuff that I can't stand; "my brother knew someone who died...my uncle ate a cat on speed...I heard of a guy who OD'd and passed out in the fireplace and Santa couldn't get down the chimney..." Oooh - all drugs are bad, drugs are the bogeyman!

Humans have been taking drugs for thousands of years. I'll tell you the ONLY two reasons why some drugs are illegal;

a) It doesn't fit into the modern social corporate ideal.
b) They're not taxed.

Greg, calling ALL addicts idiots is like saying all humans are idiots. You occasionally blurt out recovery-speak which doesn't actually MEAN anything.

Everyone has the capacity to become an addict and everyone has the capacity to overcome it, just because Layne Staley (or Cobain, or anyone) didn't have the support they needed is no reflection on their intelligence or worth.

However, I will agree on one point - it is all about choice. Anything is. You can choose to make your point with logic, or you can try to make your point though insults. I don't think there's any point in pissing people off unless they're being blinkered idiots.

to interrupt your silly wars, let me spew few words about "grunge"-I agree that it was just a label to sell hard rock bands under a different name. While Soundgarden was basically Led Zeppelin rip off, Pearl Jam was basically Led Zeppelin and Black Crowes rip off (though a little more original than Soundgarden), Alice In Chains were always heavy metal band in my book, with a very big influence of Black Sabbath. I like all of the bands of that era.

For what it's worth, I met Layne a few times, and he was always an unassuming, polite nice guy. It's just a pity that his way to get away from his demons was such a destructive one.

I know my opinion on the man isn't popular, but it's my opinion nonetheless.
Are my words harsh to some? Sure.
Disrespectful even? If you think so then they are to you.

At the end of the day it's still just my opinion and this is only a messageboard. The sun rose today, it'll set in the evening and our lives will continue. It's not that big of a deal. There's no need to treat it as such.

not anymore, being addicted to sex i take what you say as specifically directed at me. even though your implications are toward those who ruine thier lives by taking a drug they know is killing them. and i sir am not a piece of shit. i'm simply a horny bastard :p

I always get torn up when talking about Layne. My music love side gets upset and shit that he is now dead and I will never hear anymore music from him. But when you get right down to it, he is a dick for not getting off the junk and leaving the world. Being a heroin addict is suicide, if you kick the habit then you just cheated death imo. So while I love the music of AIC, I hate Layne for not getting the help he knew that he needed.

I don't recall "TD" making comments about his son. I think TD disappeared (or was asked to) when he jumped on Brent.

Hey guys,
Met megadeth at brisbane airport last week and he invited us back to the hotel. We sat around for 2 hours having a few beers and sharing stories. We were talking about the clash of the titans tour and then about layne's death. Then dave proceeds to tell us a story about how when he was recording the world needs a hero record he was sitting down playing his guitar and someone walked up to him and shoved his shoulder. he looks up and this bloke says ' hey man ' and dave looks at him like who is this homeless wretch and this guy said 'it's me, jerry' dave turns around and says 'cantrell' it was him. As it turns out he was living out the back of the studio smoking crack morning, noon and night and finally got busted for drugs and was in LA county jail and an officer came up to him and said liten jerry I'm a big fan of yours I want to help you what can i do, jerry turns around to him and says fuck you man I'm a junkie so they left him to go cold turkey for 3 days in jail. A fter dave told that story he says 'and LA county jail is no place to go cold tukey off drugs'
