Leaves's Eyes - Njord

"Thank you... you are beautiful" - Curufin

Sorry to spam up your thread Brian... had to get a laugh at Leaves' Eyes expense (and an inside joke with a few friends). I haven't heard the disc, nor will I. The whole female fronted thing is getting to be much like the 80s metal scene as far as I am concerned... way too many copy cats, with very little talent spread between the lot.

I've listened to the EP, but not the full length yet. Its not hitting me as strongly as the last one, that is for sure. The single ("My Destiny") reminds me a bit of "What Have You Done Now", especially with Alex Krell's brief vocals inserted into the chorus. The cover of "Scarborough Fair" is very nice, though!

I pretty much spit water all over my desk, thank you. No, you can't understand unless you were with us for the first 4 shows. It was unbelievable, especially when she locked herself in the Bus by accident.

It's fairly solid, on par with their other albums - catchy, with very pretty vocals and interesting lyrics, but not a ton of instrumental interest. I love Liv Kristine, but I always find Leaves' Eyes a bit dull on cd. They're amazing in concert though.

Haha. That was a fun time. By the time we got to SF we could practically speak in unison with them during their set.

I have to agree with your statement to an extent. Honestly, I'm not huge into the genre, but there are a few bands that stand out to me amongst the others. Leaves Eyes are one of those bands for me.

I agree.

I would completely disagree with that. There are a lot more female fronted bands than there have been in the past, and yeah, some of them are going to be bad. I don't think there's a higher percentage of bad female fronted bands than male fronted ones, and there are many who are really outstanding, but don't get the attention they deserve.

...i am really particular when it comes to female-fronted bands....but i love leaves' eyes...i think liv has a soft, beautiful voice...her and alex blend together well...

in regards to 'njord'...'my destiny' is a fav and i also LOVE the cover of 'scarborough fair', which is such a beautiful song, they do it justice...

You are wrong mate!. Not a huge fan of the genre, but there is some great talent there. By not even listening it's kinda hard to have an opinion me thinks...

I think it's their most solid yet... some of the songs are catchy as hell, "Take the Devil in Me" in particular. Much more bombastic than their older stuff, too.

I am not saying there is not some talent.. there certainly is. I used to be a HUGE Nightwish fan, for what its worth. I see a massive watering down of the entire genre, with many forging more pop oriented motifs into the music (See Delain). I see direct parallels with the hair metal scene. There are so many clones and knockoffs these days.. its tough for me to take most seriously. Many of the bands just told themselves "shit, if we just throw a woman on vocals... we've got to be a better band".

I thought I'd bump my previous thread about Njord, considering Glenn's added bonus. I'm still listening to this on regular rotation on my MP3 player. If you haven't given it a shot yet, well now is a good time to do it! :kickass:

It's like the late-2000s version of scream-singing and having breakdowns.

Definitely more bombastic! I think the orchestrations are the highlight of the album, as they sound spectacular. I find myself missing some of the epic, singalong type choruses that the last album featured, but in their place I think this album is much more focused, much more mature (sometimes a dreaded thing), and musically much more tight. Liv Kristine sounds better than ever, and I think most of the songwriting on this album is more suited to her voice than some of the earlier material. The only real knock I have on the album are Alexander's vocals. Oftentimes they sound out of place and unnecessary (My Destiny for example), other times they are so indecipherable as to be useless. Thankfully, they are not overly prevalent on the album.... Just enough to let you know he is lurking in the background, sword in hand most likely..... :kickass:

Highlight of the album is the metalized version of "Scarborough Fair". One of the best versions of this tune I have ever heard.....

God what a can of worms. Extend your comment, and almost ALL bands are crap, and there is very little talent spread among them.

If you want to hear crap, just turn on your radio. That is the land of no-talent copy cat bands.

Maybe we are just spoiled, having the best musicians on the planet playing our music.

To a certain extent I would agree, but you're limiting yourself by not even giving some of the more excellent bands a chance, trust me, the latest Leaves' Eyes is worth a few spins.
