Looking for a good starting/reference point for mixing my bass tones. I'm using an active 5 string for my next project, looking for, as always, teh brOOtalz ;) What do you guys use as a starting point for EQ/COMP settings? Any general/golden rules?

buy a sansamp bass diver pedal
start with everything on 6-7 adjust to taste
smash the crap out of it with an ashley sc-20

split the parallel out to an ampeg svt and a fridge, mic the fridge with an at4033 about 4 inches back pointed at a dustcap.

Note phase, adjust accordingly
enjoy the bass of GOD

boost around 800 with a fairly narrow Q move it around in the mix until you find the sweet spot

you can get a little bit of the pick attack back around 2-3k

I usually end up with a boost closer to 600

+1 on 2k-ish for pick attack

I've found there is a lot more mid than low in a lot of bass tracks..

AGREED !!
Also, you can buss your bass track to another track, throw in there some distortion VST, HP it at like... hm.. 500, or 600 (that's up to taste) LP at like 6000 (that's up to taste too), and crank up the distortion... I'm using MDA distortion for that, really nice :p

here's a starter for you UAD users

UAD Preflex Mono

Compressor section:
-30 gate
-20 compression threshold
ratio 6:1
attack (medium, but varies from player / song)
release (fast, but varies from player / song)
engage the "boost" button

Preflex section:
-pre-
lo 6
mid 6
high 9
color 6
bent 6
-post-
lo 0
mid -9
hi +6
output 0

amp - A: bassmon or gemini
bright button turned off
morph 100% to the LEFT

turn the cab off

gemini tends to work better with cleaner stuff, and active pickups sound great on this
get new strings if you're missing some attack. go to the source before tweaking knobs. blue steel strings are nice on passive pickups. bassmon rocks for the grunge gain.
