Lincoln got shot because he was an atheist.

No, I think it works here. The reasonable outweigh the retarded enough that progressive laws get passed. Gay marriage is legal in California as of yesterday. I just wish we'd change our concealed carry laws a bit.

That's hardly generalisable across an entire nation though. Democratic political organisation is not intrinsically useless, but it does (and should!) presuppose that every participant is of an objectively sane and intelligent disposition. Which is clearly not the case.

The government here passed gay marriage laws, despite 64% of the country being against it. It's not so much able voters but strong leaders that get these things done.

Oh the US here is trying to set a constitutional amendment about marriage being hetero, despite the fact it would be stuck down by a judge in 5-10 years, even IF it passed. They tried it with alcohol. Morons.

Wish ours had the strong mind of progression and science.

We're somewhat lucky here in that department. I dislike our government (the Scottish and the British incarnations) but there is a decent and rational side to them. No serious debate exists over changing abortion laws, the death penalty was removed decades ago, and gay marriage passed with no problems across all four constitutions within the United Kingdom.

We are, however, having some terribly problems with privacy and liberal freedoms.
