Yep, guthrie is amazing. I've been whoring his name on forums for some time now. Definitely right up there with Timmons, Morse, Johnson, and Petrucci in my top 5. Absolutely incredible. One could get lost in his youtube videos for days, or (in my case) well over a year now.

As for the Spider Valves, someone posted some clips on the petrucci forum and I wasn't impressed at all. They weren't recorded all that well though, so I'm reserving an opinion for when i get to try one in person.

sorry? why is that, exactly?

It wasn't a "best guitar players ever" list, it was a "my favorites" list btw. The only person on that list I would, without hesitation, put on a "best" list (assuming we're speaking overall and not by genre") is Guthrie.

Hey Meedles...Guthrie is the man...I have to order his album...his style is right up my alley...his tone as well...I'm still searching and getting closer. Must be the Cornford amps he uses...sweet! I think he uses Suhr and Briggs guitars. After more exploration on Youtube...this guy is my new favorite...Govan and Timmons...these are the guys IMO.

Can you post a link to the Spider clips? Thx. Honestly, I haven't read anything positive.

Check out this chick playing Guthrie Govan...unreal!

the clips are from some dude on the JP forum.

As for that video, I'll save my comments for a day when I'm feeling less critical. I'll just say that she might have done well to play over the backing track without Guthrie's solo on it.:)

Well...she blows away the dude doing the sound clips...I'd burn every Spider Valve after hearing that!!! My ears are bleeding!

It's tough to hear the guitar doubling but she's got oodles of potential....you don't hear many chicks coming near that.

I played through a line 6 2/12 combo for four jam sessions last spring. It was ... OK. Cant recall the model. It had alot of sound options, various effects and such but it wasnt the sound I was used to nor a sound I wanted. So I gathered my old equipment that was laying around the counrtyside in various degrees of turbulence and began rebuilding.

I need to break down and order a mixed four pack of Vin30's/G12H from Avatar to complete the rebuild. Then Ill be happy

*Petrucci is without doubt amounst the greatest guitarists*

i tried a spider III valve this week. I thought it was one of the finest sounding amps i've played on. definately better tone then the standard spIII. i'm considering buying it now.

I think that the Spider series are some of the worst amps I've ever heard....the volume differences between models is ridiculous as well. I played my new used Roland BC-30 2x10 with my vintage Ibanez delay and my Tonebone Classic...tonal bliss!!!!

Yo...razor...is that Petrucci comment sarcastic?...I'm not a huge fan, I like some stuff, but get bored real easy with the rest.

not at all, the boys got skills, feel and versatility

no musician is perfect nor are any exempt from sounding like themselves

I had mediocre (at best) experiences with other amps in the Spider series. That said, I spent a good deal of time auditioning the new Spider Valve, and ended up taking one home.

I like the sounds I'm getting out of the SV better than what I ever got out of my Vetta, and this is one of the finest sounding amps I have ever owned in 30 years of playing.

Here are some more worthwhile links in terms of hearing some good Spider Valve tones:

There's also an MP3 of Ed Degenaro putting a Spider Valve through it's paces at www.vettaville.nl , but the site seems to be down at the moment.

Soundclips don't do much for me either, especially coming through PC speakers. I'm just pointing out that there are some soundclips out there that aren't total crap.

I was considering a lot of other amps, and I wasn't sold on the Spider Valve, either, until I spent a couple of dedicated hours with it, doing A/B/C comparisons with other amps. But it's a personal taste thing. I know guys who love these things, including me, and I know guys who didn't really like 'em at all.

BTW, "Breathing Room" was really nice.

Hey...thanks a lot!

Yeah...I just can't embrace the Line 6 thing...I am curious which amps you compared with though...you're right...tone is such a personal thing...so is price!

Here are those Ed Degenaro clips.

I did some comparisons with amps I was considering, including a used Vox AD60VTX, and some that I wasn't, including a B-52 (tube head), a Marshall JCM2000, and a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe (for clean tones). The Spider Valve felt more "liquid" to me on the high-gain settings, if that makes any sense. Plus the price/performance ratio was, for me, off the charts.

If I played a lot of country or rockabilly, the Hot Rod Deluxe might be on my list. Sounded pretty sweet.

But I've been "downsizing" my rig, so I had no interest in getting a new head or any more cabinets. But I did include a few real tube amps in the mix because I wanted some points of reference as I was auditioning amps. I also spent a little time with the SpiderIII, and of course got the usual digital hash.
