Your bassist needs a solid live amp for the instances where the engineer/FOH can't or won't put him through a DI.
Ashdown and Orange are great sounding for their affordable price.
I would recommend he shells out for either a Sansamp bass driver/DI or an MXR M80 Bass driver/DI as:
-These are both great sounding pedals to have in front of your bass amp
-If (like in most cases) the sound guy wants a DI taken before sound hits the amp, both of these pedals have a DI out
