Live pitch correction/processing

I don't think that's true. antares has a rack unit but I feel like it would be hard to make it not obvious - any fuckup and you are gonna go t-pain.

why not just put the vox on a backing track and lip sync? you are "cheating" either way, may as well go for a fool-proof method.

Hmm.. there's a lot to think about then. i know there's a way to have a voice activated backing track. By using a gate of some sort, you trigger it.

Yeah, i'd really love to figure that one out

I always thought there was just a dude at the side of the stage or at FOH or something that would just turn the mic on and off whenever necessary haha. using some sort of gate makes way more sense though.

There are vocal harmony generators like the TC helicon but I've never seen a touring artist with one of those on a club or stadium level. They all just use tracks-- it's just simpler, more controllable and more consistant.
I've seen an AT in FOH racks before but the other stuff you guys are talking about just doesn't happen.

edit: to the original question, there isn't really great live pitch correction. At best you might have midi feeding AT but it's safer to just leave it in chromatic mode. But seriously, 99% of the time this problem is solved with tracks running under (often over actually) the vocalist.

i'm thinking about doing that. except on my imac.

3.06ghz, 8gb ram, 2 tb HD.
presonus firewire rack interface.

think it'll be fast enough for live use?

I'd be more worried about the presonus than the computer but shouldn't be an issue I ran it out of an m-audio fast track and a dell studio and never really had an issue so you should be fine man, try it out at practice see how it goes?

¯(°_o)/¯ How do have talent ?

+1 lol

but seriously, some people just can't do it live. I know a couple of guys that are flawless in the studio, but fall apart live. I don't know if it's just cause they aren't hearing themselves right, or what. but I KNOW they have the talent, they just can't pull it off in a live setting.

I'm selling my auto tune effects unit if your interested Lane. Antares AVP-1. Its built for live pitch correction, comes with a pedal swithc so you can turn it on and off, also built in compressor, gate and eq

I know virtually every band these days does it. regardless of their skill.

None of the bands in the last 5 years I've worked with do it.
Only 2 have used backing tracks.

One was Cascada and the other was a dance DJ for his singing parts.

Everyone else either used their talent or just got on with making a show rather than a sterile plastic performance.

How about having singers that can actually sing like the good old days when people actually had to be talented to be famous

THIS times infinity!

cant do it on stage then get the fuck off of it! Thats bullshit you can in the studio but cant live ... FUCK THAT ... Dumbest gayest fucking thing I have ever heard. LIVE you arent supposed to sound EXACTLY like the CD WTF is the point of going to a concert if everything is pitch corrected to death. Might as well just play the CD through a big PA and say "OMG WERE PLAYING LIVE"

Fuck every band in the world that does this bullshit. YOU ALL FUCKING SUCK!

I setup a lot of those DirecTV concert series things on the DVR and there are always huge artists using auto tune. The two off the top of my head is REO Speedwagon and Toto.

of course ^ tons of people are doing it.

and you know what? they are raking in hundreds of thousands if not millions per night when you consider tickets, merch, concessions, etc...
