reallllllllllllyyyyyyyyy?????

btw Mark if u were to save up $40,000 for when u come back to Australia in a shitload of time, it would turn into AUS$100,000 as soon u hit our shores.
No, I'd have $40,000 ;)

If I saved up £40,000, I *might* just scrape in with $100k ;)

If you wanted to move here, you'd need a visa. If you wanted to get a working holiday visa, save up about 5k before even applying.

A flight will cost you about $1,200 min. Get a hostel in Earls Court for a few weeks while you look for a flat-share.

Then start looking for work on your second day.

MetalMeshuggahman, simply tell the BB, that you are a (maybe) terrorist, and married to Mark.

We'll be alert, but certainly not alarmed, and ring Steve Leibman. He'll use the red phont to talk to John Howard, and Ruddock (or is it Vanstone???), and get you on the next plane to London (Or Guantanamo bay......still, you're part of the way there).

Fuck saving up, getting visas and that shit.

BTW, why would you want to go somewhere where it's nearl dark at 5PM. I spent 3 months at Oberon, and didn't like it.

Mark, they were great postcards that you scanned.

WHAT'S THAT SILVER CIGAR SHAPED OBJECT IN THE TOP RIGHT CORNER OF THE FIRST PHOTO?!?!

Hmm. Maybe Mars is getting back at us for dumping out shit on their planet. Doesn't matter. In 15 years well be up there ourselves and be able to pummel them in person. We may have to send Southy.

Ah god, Shannow could get me started on a rant, but I'm going to refrain on this occasion. :)

Yeah ask Bev about cameras. She reckons Minoltas are just the best. ;)

London's fucking expensive, Tezzmeister. Unless you can get work there, go somewhere else! Scunthorpe is a lovely spot, so try there.

Cost of living here extreme, but if you're prepared to live in a hostel or a flat share then it's doable, especially if you have a good job. As Mark says though, you really need a few thousand bucks before you travel because you might get unlucky and not walk into a job too quick. If you want to enjoy yourself in this city be prepared for your wallet to get bled dry. :) Better still organise your job before you go.

Cameras - Mark was using an Olympus MJU300 digital camera, very nice aluminium construction, 3megapixels and a 3 times optical zoom. Always get an optical zoom - anyone tells you that digital zoom is as good is a lying sack of shit and you can tell them that I said that. ;) Ignore digital zoom. Personally I wouldn't buy a camera less than 3 megapixels. It will let you make a 10x8 print easily. Avoid cameras that use AA batteries if possible, and go with something that use Lithium Ion instead. Battery life is much better, and the cameras will be smaller and lighter too. Cameras to consider (depending on budget) -

Nikon Coolpix 3100

Olympus Mju 300

Canon Ixus 400

Those of you looking for something more complex, with more manual controls etc, let me know and I'll give you my personal pick. :D

Over here getting them printed is very easy. We have a self service machine in all our stores now - you put your memory card in, select your pics using the touch screen, selct size etc and then 24 hours later you have a photographic print. I'm sure that this service must be available overseas, it's provided by Fuji. Personally I use a high quality ink jet printer because I prefer to control it all myself - I get better prints that the lab does. These days you can buy top quality A4 printers for £130. Or if use the Canon system and you only want snap shot size photos you can buy there little Dye sub printers, (CP 200 and 300) which come in at £150-£200.

Right, I'm off to watch my collectors edition of Animal House! :D

We have those self service doo-hickeys over here as well! At least, that's what the ad tells me. I've never actually used used one, but I did see one in Ted's Camera House when I last walked past one.

Cool Thanks for the info.

3 Megapixels?? Whoad, that is pretty good quality. I am looking at getting a 4 or 5 megapixel camera, so that will be awesome!

What do you think about this one:

I am thinking abuot that one pretty hard as I have seen them on sale, and they seem pretty good.

This one is the same price:
http://www.dse.com.au/cgi-bin/dse.storefront/4026e51e0cd84d12273fc0a87f9c06ee/Product/View/XG1385

Is it as good or better? Basically, that is my price range.. about $700 Australian.

Actuially, how about you go here:

And tell me which you think looks good from that list. I'd appreciate it.

You know Im up for it dude :loco:

Sprucey, that first one looks like ours, but higher res... The MJU is a lovely little camera :)

Dunno about the Canon one, though...

Sprucey - Yep the first one is exactly the same as out camera except it's 4 mega pixels instead of 3. Very simple camera, not much added control, but excellent lens quality and it meters light brilliant, ours has hardly ever been fooled. Don't get caught up with the pixel race - pixels on their own do not control quality, a good lens and a good chip are just as important. Pixels control print size - a 3 meg camera will print a 10x8, 4 meg will make something over A4 and 5 meg will print to A3.

the links didn't work properly, but Mark thinks that the second camera was a Canon A80. It's a cracking little camera, with the ability to accept wide and tele lens converters for a little more flexibility, it has full manual control and will pretty much work like an SLR BUT it has one major drawback - batteries. It's still using AA and Canon do not supply rechargeables. So, as long as you bare that in mind and invest in AA NiMH batteries (don't get less than 2000 mAH) you'll be ok. :)

Thanks Dreamy. So does your camera have a rechargable battery then?

Cause I am drawn between 2 that are the same price at the moment. One is 4 Mega Pixel, the other is 5. I was wondering what advantages a 4 MP one has over the 5MP one.

OOOOHHH Just found links.

Here is the one like yours (I think)

Here is the other one for the same price but with bigger pixel and memory
http://www.camerahouse.com.au/newsite/products_detail.asp?productID=911&categoryID=6

Which one is gooderer?

Sprucey - those cameras are exactly the same!! Thats the Olympus C5000, quite a nice camera but quite on the chunky side. Lots of manual control which is good though. Thats different to mine - mine is alot smaller and neater but is really just a compact camera. There is a compromise between the two, the Olympus C50z which has many of the same controls of the bigger C5000 but is more the size of the Mju 300. all three use a lithium Ion rechargeable battery so battery life is excellent.

when you're working out your budget make sure you allow some for extra memory. The memory you get with the camer is tiny, and only enough to see you started, you really need a much bigger card. I wouldn't buy anything less than 128mb.

Between 4 and 5 megapixels the only real benefit is the size of print you can make. If you need to make big enlargements up to A3 then go for 5 meg, but otherwise 4 is more than enough. Remember the larger the resolution the bigger the file sizes and the more memory your images will use up. :)

Oops, got in the conversation late. I do a bit of amateur photog, and know a bit on digi cameras (esp coz i'm looking for a Digital SLR!). Here's my opinions (long but worth reading for a newbie!)

Spruce, Olympus cameras are quite good. I've got an older olymp digi, and the results are impressive for a 'point and shoot' camera.
I was playing with one of hte newer olypmus cameras in a shop, was a nice feel.
Again, depends on what you are gonna do with the photos.... If you aren't gonna print them heaps, I have found that a lower megapixel camera isn't a huge drawback. both digis I own have been 3MP, coz i haven't had the need much.

One reason is the PRICE of printing photos in oz... DON'T use self service machines over here - the printers they use on em are shithouse... So take it to the counter and get them to use the good machine.
* Standard 10x15cm prints will cost you roughly 50c each, if you know where to look
* I did a few 20x25cm prints (8x10 inch), and these cost me $11 EACH, done at a kodak lab. YOu can get em cheaper from harvey norman etc, but i'm not sure of hte results.

Again as mentioned, depends if you are gonna want to use the camera with manual controls or an 'automatic' camera...

Canon lenses are quite good, and they are leading the way in Digital SLRs at least...

* Batteries: Both mine use 4 NiMH, I don't find them too bad. Get yourself a good charger and a few good sets of batteries.... I find I get about 3-4 hours out of one set (but i don't use the LCD screen).

** Zoom: as pointed out before, IGNORE digital zoom. It's useless. Oh, and 3x zoom is good, but you might wanna consider a camera with 6x zoom. My newer camera has 6x, much better. I've played with a 10x zoom, and they are a bit so-so. At the higher zoom range it can be hard to get a good photo without a tripod...

* * * ALSO! Before I forget: Spruce, make sure you go into a shop and play around with the cameras first.... Its an obvious point, but make sure you do!! No point getting a camera which feels shit in the hand.

** * * *AND! Go to Paxtons cameras if you are in Syd. They PRICE MATCH and give a shitload of extras..... So look around, get prices, then go to paxtons.

Here's a few photos I've taken with my 'old' olympus (3MP):

well, my ISPs server is down, I'll have to post em later, if you're interested

BTW, very nice photos mark!

okay i'm done, hope you got something out of all that!
