Hey

A friend of mine wants to get rid of his V30s and want to pick up the right speakers in order to get big yet controlled bottom end and smoother high end. He mainly plays metal and rock on a nice Ibanez Andy Timmons and Steve Vai with Benedetti Cream (nice pickups!!!) and a Laboga MrHector amp. His cab is a 4x12 Harley Benton which decent imo.

So here is what I though for him: 2x G12h75 Creamback (left down + right up), 1x G12t Hot 100 (down) and 1x Lynchback OR 1x G12t75.

Is it coherent? Is it preferable to choose only 2 different speakers in X pattern?

I used to have my Marshall 1960 loaded with 2 V30's, 1 Vox-labeled Greenback, and 1 G12 EVH. Honestly it was better when I swapped the Vox Greenback for another EVH.

I'm sure you've noticed that with a closed-back 4x12, the tone changes as you move across its front because you hear some speakers slightly off axis at times. Now, that gets even more exaggerated when you're using 2 different kinds of speakers in an X pattern, because some speakers become more emphatic as you get closer or further away from them. When you add even another speaker to the mix (2+1+1), the tone becomes pretty unpredictable and radically different as you move across the front of the cab, IME.

The whole X-pattern thing can be cool, but even having my cab setup like that, I feel it's a little complicated to work with. Throw yet another flavor in the mix, and, to me, it's just overwhelming and detrimental rather than beneficial.
