This came up on the random shuffle this morning and it just froze me. That melody kicking in at the 1:28 mark is just beautiful.

Anything else out there I can check out in the vein of this instrumental?

Right off the bat I can't think of anything that reminds me of that tune... but hearing this for the first time in a long while brings me back to the feelings of pure musical bliss that this album was! I don't think I can think of a record that got as much play from me in those years... Will have to dig it out this week!

It's no secret I don't particularly care for PoS myself, but that's a pretty great instrumental. It reminds me a lot of an impromptu Studio jam. Everyone said PoS is kind of a different band now. Maybe I should give them another shot, if it's stuff like this. And they earned a lot of respect from me (not that THAT means dick-all) for this last US tour and the way they warriored it out.

I don't know of anything particularly like this but Robert Miles does a lot of really killer moody instrumental stuff.

As amazing as they were on tour (even the Road Salt material came off great live!), there's nothing that compares to their first four albums. And this album is their magnum opus. It's a shame they've drifted so far from their earlier stuff. Which leads me to the answer to the original question. I don't believe I've heard anything that remotely sounds like this. While Wastefall from Greece is about as close as you'll come to an early PoS clone, they don't have nearly the melodic interludes that you'll hear on songs like Dryad, Chain Sling, or Song for the Innocent

Yeah..I'm familar with Wastefall (remember I had them booked at one time before the cancellation). I'm not looking for PoS influenced band, just music that sounds in the vein of that specific instrumental.

I remember Wastefall being booked all too well. I posted it for others that may not be familiar.

As for that instrumental...one of a kind as far as I know. I'd love to hear anything that even remotely resembles it.

You should revisit them, just keep in mind the instrumental Glenn posted is actually an old one... From their actual Prog days.

Got throw the penalty flag at the Wolfstone. That falls into the proggy Celtic field to these ears ala Iona, etc with the fiddlin'. Good stuff...but way too happy for a Dryad comparison.

Thanks Nidstang! That was brilliant. Is the entire disc like that?
Yes indeed!
And they have 4 releases out at the moment, their newest, "Journal" just came out.

Here's another favorite track of mine.

Also if you're looking for something alittle more guitar orientated check this guy out.

I guess the majority of the instrumental stuff i listen to doesn't have a jazz-prog base, but rather either Folk/Techno. Wierd, I could've sworn Ive heard a bunch of stuff that sounds similar to this. Oh well.

Love this thread.

I'd say some of the Blackmore's Night stuff gets a little like this. It's a little more folky but still similar.

Sigur Rios is a bit different but I could see it being listened to in the same sessions as something like this.

Some of the instrumentals off Everwood's The Raven's Nest are similar though more upbeat/tempo (killer album)

IZZ (Darkened Room) also has some instrumentals worth it that I could hear popping on after this. They would be a bit more Yes like.

Delving into movie soundtracks would also be a good fix for this style. Stuff like Last of the Mohicans is similar.

I'll see if I can remember and come back and add some links later (youtube banned from work).

EDIT:

Definitely check out The Cancer Conspiracy - The Audio Medium. ...To Sleep is a wonderful piano piece. The whole album is instrumental, though a bit of Coheed meets prog and Jazz (sax solos) on the rest album.
Parts of Subterranean Masquerade, Phideaux, and Pineapple Thief would be similar as well.
