Here's a story I've been wanting to tell that'll really piss you off.It has nothing to do with Metallica themselves,so don't worry about that.I have this friend named Dave I used to work with.He just discovered Metallica with "Re-Load"& went backwards through their catalogue & got quite obsessed with them.He'd be asking me questions everyday about their history,what they're like live & as people etc.He then began asking me when they'll be playing live again because he'd love to see them in concert.
Some of you may know when "St. Anger" was about to be released,Metallica played 1 week of shows at the legendary Filmore auditorium which has a capacity of about 1200.Only fan club members were allowed to these shows.So people from all over flocked to catch these exclusive small shows.fan club members were selling their free tickets on e-bay for like $500!It was big deal to go to one of these shows.
So I thought of Dave & called my friend Frank who works for Metallica.I knew it was a long shot but I asked him if there was anyway he coud score a pair of tix to one of the shows.Frank wasn't too thrilled but because he knows me & I'm a respected elder statesman in the scene,he bent over backwards for me.Frank called me back & said he was able to get ONE ticket to the wednesday show.So I asked him to put the ticket under my friend Dave's name.
So I called Dave & told him the good news.Then he asks me if I could get another ticket.I told him "Hell no!Just go!"and he's all "You mean by myself?" Geez! I go to gigs by myself all the time!So I told him he better fuckin' go!He told me wednesdays are the only nights he gets to see his new girlfriend.He had started having an affair with this married chick who lived an hour and a half away & they hooked up every wednesday.He'd been seeing the chick for a couple of months now.I told him one week wasn't going to kill him.ESPECIALLY WHEN HE HAS A FREE TICKET TO SEE METALLICA IN A SMALL VENUE!!!
But he actually complained it was the only time he gets to see her & it would be a whole week before he sees her again
He asked if I could get the ticket for another night,that was a no go.He then asked if maybe he could buy a scalped ticket for his woman to which I informed him that would cost hundreds of dollars if not more!So I finally lectured him #1 if he couldn't go he better fuckin' tell me now & if not,he better not pass this oppurtunity up!Well he was undecisive & said he'd get back to me.
I was having a busy week & didn't have time to ride his ass & make sure he went.I figured he'd see the light & GO.So the show comes & goes.I called him up the day after & guess what?HE FUCKING FLAKED!!!He was so pussy whipped he decided to see his woman instead & didn't have the decency to tell me to give that ticket to someone else.
Frank, who scored the ticket for me was furious at me.This dude Dave had no clue the magnitude of what a fuck up this was!All he could say was he's set in his ways & would've rather seen his girl than wait a whole week to see her again.The guy has no shame or remorse for blowing this oppurtunity of a life time & has criticised me for making such a big deal getting on his case over this!He really thought just blowing this show off was no big deal!Well because of this, I'm NEVER EVER going to bend over backwards & do somtehing like that for a friend again!It made ME look bad & I doubt my friend Frank who works for Metallica will ever do something like this for me again either!
They are the ones who put you there, and they can quick as fuck take you right back down.
