so which is more appealing?

simple base level conveyance of a message ?

or

obtuse convoluted multileveled maze of intellectualization? (is that a word?):hypno:

or another non sweeping generalization :Smokin: :zombie: :u-huh:

answer as a listener/ reader + writer of such material

I don't actually pay that much attention to a lot of lyrics
but those that strike me seem to be the ones that use fairly simple language in a clever way. such as Jello Biafras efforts

this was inspired by the tool thread

i like both. i like the lyrics if they're written well. i don't really see it as either or, i just read the lyrics for what they are. there can be great 'arse'-type lyrics as well as horrid 'bard'-type (as metal fans should be particularly aware i guess)

Simple, but not elementary

don't necessarily like the wannabe deep bullshit, with hidden meanings behind misunderstood connotations that some bands think sets them apart.

Depends on the music for me. Although a band having overly simplistic, often stupid lyrics is more annoying to me than a band dealing in hyper complex issues (if that makes any sense ?). Perhaps thats because its easier for me to ignore the lyrics of something.

Def Leppard lyrics are the fucking best ... even they confessed to writing them to fit the beat of the song ... not vice versa ... fucking genius :kickass: :loco:

Love is like a bomb, baby, c'mon get it on
Livin' like a lover with a radar phone
Lookin' like a tramp, like a video vamp
Demolition woman, can I be your man?
(Be your man)
Hey!
(Huh!)
Hey!
Razzle 'n' a dazzle 'n' a flash a little light
Television lover, baby, go all night
Sometime, anytime, sugar me sweet
Little miss ah innocent sugar me, yeah

What lyrics really speak to me seem to the be the bard type kind (Opeth, At the Gates, Tool, etc.) but the ones I actually remember and truly love are the simple ones. George Thoroughgood > yuo

I like trying to decipher hidden meanings. It's interesting to realize what some bands are talking about when you figure it out.

Give me something non-cliche and creative

aye its not the norm

I'd just been thinking about lyrics and whathaveyou since I just realised I haven't written any for nearly 2 years when I wrote the 3 songs for the next scald album(s) (pete wrote the mcd we're doing and vermiculatus is an instrumental)
thinking about wether to print them too

should I leave them off and be more mysterical
or is it better to let people have the chance to decipher them
its not like theyre 'that' obvious anyway

anyone else write lyrics here? if so what sort of approach do you take?
