The 8th studio release from MALEVOLENT CREATION sees the band at a crossroads. The plague of line up changes once again strikes this veteran death metal group, this time once again claiming vocalist Brett Hoffman, who leaves amidst well documented drug and personal problems. Drummer for hire Dave Culross does not return on this CD either. They are replaced by HATE PLOW’s Kyle Symons and newcomer Justin Dipinto respectively. While Dipinto is definitely no Culross, he still gets the job done effectively. And it should be no surprise that Symons joined, as he did a lot of the backing growls on Envenomed, due to Hoffman’s troubles.

The only problem with MALEVOLENT CREATION at this moment is that the lines between them and HATE PLOW, which 3 members of MC are a part of, are beginning to dull and fade away. Don’t get me wrong, the songs still have that murderous brutal feel they’ve become known for, thanks to the guitar playing of Phil Fasciana and Rob Barrett. And the special treat of one James Murphy’s guest leadwork on “Assassin Squad,” is truly inspiring, after what he’s been through in the last few years. Favorite tracks would be the title track, which opens the cd at a furious pace, “Lifeblood,” and “The Cardinal’s Law,” full of excellent tempo changes.

Production wise, this album rips, having been mixed by KATAKLYSM guitarist Jean-Francois Dagenais. All in all, an impressive release from a band that refuses to be kept down.
