MaryLand Death Fest anyone?

i can't believe bands from Japan and Australia are playing this ... unknown bands at that.

and we can't even get a lousy RC fest off the ground.

Yep, I never understood the hype surrounding this fest. A couple of ok headliners and death metal bands here and there, but otherwise, the lineups are pure crap year in and year out.

To the kids into that music, it's a huge line-up. There are a few bands on there I'd love to see. One of the biggest things about this show is their ability to grab bands from around the world. In the US there is currently no other festival that can come close to this one in terms of worldwide participation.

Makes more sense - though it's sad to see so many kids are into garbage. This isn't in my opinion, this is fact! :loco:

Ok, in all seriousness, different strokes for different folks and all that.

Well, I guess if there's a market for it, then more power to 'em. If it's successful, then that's great. It just seems like if a festival of this caliber can be successful, a festival like HC should be able to do just as well if not better. Perhaps time will tell.

Looks like a pretty good line-up to me. You've got a couple of classics like Grave and Nuclear Assault, the hilarity of Macabre and Blood Duster, & Impaled and Martyr!! :kickass:

Ok so the last 8 rows of bands listed did nothing for me. :loco:

I actually contacted these guys a couple of years back. I was looking into doing a show like this and was looking to pick their brains. Of course they didn't reply to me...no competion is good competition, I guess. I was hoping that, since I would be doing a Black Metal show, they might not see it as a threat. Anyway...

For the most part I will say I agree that a fest like HC should be able to do well. I do think, however, that the Black Metal scene (I tie HC in with Black Metal because it generally pulls from the same audience) is less supportive of live shows than the Death Metal scene. It is something I have noticed over the past 15 years or so. I've never really been able to put a finger on why that is, but there have been several conversations with various people over the years (from both scenes and all age ranges). One theory is that a lot of Death Metal fans are more apt to want to go in and get hammered and start a pit, thus attracting those who want to interract where Black Metal is more of an isolationist movement whose fans aren't always as interested in being in public, regardless of the nature of the show. Any truth to this? No idea.

/\ Very interesting perspective indeed. I'd venture to say that's at least a part of it. That said, if a fest like HC can continue to grow in stature, the "exclusivity" factor should ultimately allow it to draw a wider audience. Perhaps the pagan/black metal scene is less established and immediate on these shores than old school death/grind, etc.

i would say that is pretty much correct. DM fans definetelly want to drink and rage, while most BM fans are more into the "experience" but not the comraderrie.

never been to HC, but it sounds like it falls somewhere in the middle.

speaking of fests, is the Milwaukee Metal Fest still a yearly event?

WTF!

Check out this amazing picture of the crowd assembled for the Vicious Rumours set. This was sent to me by a friend who was in attendance on day one. Keep in mind they were the headliner for Friday...
