Re: economics, I'm already being forced to 'get off the pot', but that's quite normal down here. Not enough work, too many studios etc.
If you read back, you'll see that I'm not making justifications for mastering my own stuff, as that's not something I actively try to do. I capitalize upon the objectivity of a third party, with a lot of nice gear, to smooth out the rougher edges on the project. The point was that there are some guys around who seem to solely work with indie bands/labels, and do fine from it. If it's an active choice, then more power to them.
I do appreciate the wisdom and hindsight in your last post. It was a good read, and certainly helpful.
