Close, it's masking tape. When recording rhythm parts, I tape up the strings I'm not using to prevent unwanted noise. Makes a huge difference, because I'm not the cleanest player in the world...

hmmm...that's a pretty good idea....not as unusual as the pencil taped to the micrphone trick....but I like this one.
