Mayhem - Chimera

I was just going to start a thread... Observations of this song I've downloaded:

  • A trillion times better than the fetid pile of rubbish that is GDoW
  • Far too "technical" for its own good
  • Atmosphere = 0
  • Maniac sounds much less annoying than on GDoW and (to a lesser extent) WLA
  • It's entirely unexciting. "Plain" is the word indeed.

To sum it up, it's not a disappointment because I had no expectations. Juding from this song, though, the album isn't something I'm going to buy.

no return to the de mysteriis roots... it's more towards Wolf Lair's brutallity, with an increase in technicallity and sharper production

Agreed.. this is boring and uninspired... its not terrible.. but it doesn't have the De Myestriis greatness.. in the very very least...

Now that I've heard the CD: It should/could be a lot better. They seem to have only about 70% of the gas they need to support and propel the amazing heaps of ideas and skill here. My attention wandered after half an hour. It's not as lethal as Wolf's Lair, or as experimental as Grand Declaration. The drums sound chattery. There is a psychedelic bending quality that rules, though, kind of like Hate Eternal. I wish there'd been more quality control, because all the elements are here -- another mini-LP would have been fine if it was all top-notch.
