Each of the members musical styles really complements eachother (Like Dry Kill Logic ) and that is a plus for any band.

Maynard (topic of discussion) is an extremely talented vocalist, just listen properly to the CD's or download some Tool/APC live bootlegs (videos are better).

You can see that he can omit his powerful voice, without strain, or effort, that it comes to him easily.

This alone takes a long time of practice work up to, and a lot of effort to maintain.

Ugh.

The man can sing. He can scream better than most "real" metal vocalists (Ticks and Leeches, Jerk-Off) and has sustain like no one else. His voice is ever-changing, surprising and unique.

To dismiss Tool as having no melody is ridiculous.

Tool has shown dedication and integrity for nearly 10 years. Though their style does evolve (as any band's does), they have never produced a poor album, and their talent is evident in every song.

But back to Maynard.. A Perfect Circle let him write more traditional songs, much more verse/chorus oriented than Tool, and evoking many different emotions. The vocal style was used to match the music of APC, and allowed for vocal harmonies, something Tool never used before (but have since).

All the music in APC was written in advance by Billy Howerdel, and Maynard simply took a stab at lyrics and vocal melodies. It's not just Tool-Lite, it stands well on its own. Maynard made sure to devote his full attention to each band, which is one of the reasons Lateralus took so long to be released.

I don't think he's suffered at all from his stint with APC, and Lateralus, while not metal, is a masterwork.

Sometimes he's had on a gown (like men wake up to in movies, then go get the newspaper in), really small shorts and a mug of coffee to go with it.
Other times hes wearing..uh.. sily... an... strange... .h.... stuff....

Maynard is one of the very few vocalists who deserves every second of the praise he gets. I don't think that everyone should have to like them but like I stated in an earlier thread they have not compromised their sound whatsoever and still make quality albums every time! The man has an absolutely fantastic singing voice and is one of a select few within the metal genre who can SING. I don't think a band will come along ever that has impressed me both with recordings and live performances the way Tool has. The only band to ever come close is Opeth! They are two different styles of music, but I cannot imagine how great it would be if Tool took Opeth out on tour! It's not completely out of the realm of possibility,they took Meshuggah!

Been listening to all types of metal for 17 years now and I have my own opinions just like you do. I'm sure some of the bands you like I would consider to be crap. Also please enlighten me on what I have been denied musically? Since you seem to be an expert let me know....

not an obsessive tool fan, but i put some of their work in the "genius" type category, my personal fav from them was aenima, and i really dig a few perfect circle songs, like the opening track ("the hunger" i believe?) i thought that was real intense melodically. the rest was TOO mellow. but as for lateralus, i haven't picked it up yet. what i've heard seemed boring and redundant. i think he could do alot better than he has been.
