Weird..I dislike his growling on the older albums except on Turn Loose The Swans that is. I think Aaron is much more diverse in his growling on Songs of darkness. I don't think he's very diverse in his earlier growling. Nor do I think he sung better earlier. I don't miss the old days, because the songs where much more predictable back then and the guitar sound was too whiny with the violin on top of it with his to high pitched voice on top of that. The drone voice works much better I think..at least when it builds up to something.
The Dreadful Hours marked a new beginning for my part where the songs became a bit less predictable and the blend of normal vocals and growling worked again. But it didn't really become good until Songs of Darkness. I hated The light at the end of the world btw..of the new albums, it's the only one I don't listen to at all..except 2 songs or so. More or less everything is wrong with that album.
Can't believe you don't like Songs of Darkness though. It's for my part the best MDB album of all time, because it doesn't have 3 songs or more songs that I hate. MDB almost always manage to make a couple of songs I can't stand. One friend of mine in particular used to say that Aaron have never sung in his life. I don't agree with him, but he almost has a point..I can't say that he's wrong either. On The Angel and the Dark river, Aaron simply just has a lot more energy or is exaggerating his drama voice more. I love that album (even if it's very high pitched and kills my ears if I have to listen to it all through), but it's not really singing is it? It's something in between. Well, this is my take on it. We'll just have to agree to disagree.
And yes, my first MDB album was TAATDR which was my second cd buy back in 1994 after Paradise Lost's Icon...I think. So I could have been one of the "miss the old days" guys, but I simply don't.
