MDB Update 'For Lies I Sire'

Weird..I dislike his growling on the older albums except on Turn Loose The Swans that is. I think Aaron is much more diverse in his growling on Songs of darkness. I don't think he's very diverse in his earlier growling. Nor do I think he sung better earlier. I don't miss the old days, because the songs where much more predictable back then and the guitar sound was too whiny with the violin on top of it with his to high pitched voice on top of that. The drone voice works much better I think..at least when it builds up to something.
The Dreadful Hours marked a new beginning for my part where the songs became a bit less predictable and the blend of normal vocals and growling worked again. But it didn't really become good until Songs of Darkness. I hated The light at the end of the world btw..of the new albums, it's the only one I don't listen to at all..except 2 songs or so. More or less everything is wrong with that album.

Can't believe you don't like Songs of Darkness though. It's for my part the best MDB album of all time, because it doesn't have 3 songs or more songs that I hate. MDB almost always manage to make a couple of songs I can't stand. One friend of mine in particular used to say that Aaron have never sung in his life. I don't agree with him, but he almost has a point..I can't say that he's wrong either. On The Angel and the Dark river, Aaron simply just has a lot more energy or is exaggerating his drama voice more. I love that album (even if it's very high pitched and kills my ears if I have to listen to it all through), but it's not really singing is it? It's something in between. Well, this is my take on it. We'll just have to agree to disagree.

And yes, my first MDB album was TAATDR which was my second cd buy back in 1994 after Paradise Lost's Icon...I think. So I could have been one of the "miss the old days" guys, but I simply don't.

Any album needs a bit of time before the sentence is sure. How many times have you listened to it? And which MDB albums are your favs?

"Boring" is what I'm afraid of from this album though

I didn't like GOTS except for 2 maybe 3 songs.

I like pretty much everything else. Some of it isn't outstanding, but it's all listenable.

I really did like The Light at the End of the World and SODWOL, ALODK was okay, and really a grower...it really has some awesome moments...

The Dreadful Hours was awesome.

I've only heard the song "My Body, A Funeral" in its entirety. I enjoyed it. From personal experience I tend to put too many expectations on an album and poo poo it when it doesn't live up to them on the first listen. I see this one growing on me.

Love the "poo poo" part of your post :D

After a couple of listens I can safely say that this is not what I was hoping for. It's like the previous album, but it doesn't even a solid hit single type track like deeper down. The growls are strained and whiny, the riffs are forgettable, and the return of the violin really adds nothing special. There's always the back catalogue I suppose.

I won't be getting the new MDB cd either. It's probably a "grower" like others have mentioned, but from the samples there's just not enough to make me interested. yet. I do think highly of them as a band though.

Having said that I must issue a warning here! I'm a bit biased as I'm going to mention my friends band, but if you people like MDB you should listen to some samples of this band and see what you think.
www.myspace.com/mysilentwake (Try the songs "The Dying things were living for" and "Tunnels")

Obviously from the name there's going to be similarities between this band and My Dying Bride! But my friends band adds some different elements to it. I don't listen to doom as much as I used to, but when I'm in the mood it's fun (in a depressing way) to listen to for me.

Ok, I've listened to this album for a couple of times now. It's MDB going downhill for my part. This album is probably worse than their last one..maybe it's a grower, but I doubt it. There's a lot of good on it of course, but the album as a whole is weak by MDBs standards.

The production of the album is also rather weak..the drums doesn't merge into the rest of the soundscape at all. Of course..that's not THAT important all in all...but it's one of many things that annoys me with this album. It's up to either Paradise Lost or Katatonia to save this year...so yes, take your time!

it has blast beats on one song which was a real surprise as they haven't been seen since Towards The Sinister! I've listened to it about 6 times and it is a grower. Plus I just got a good set of headphones so once I've blasted it through them a few times it might sink in more. Plus my copy came with a MDB guitar pick so it must be good!! :)

hehe, I got that too. The album with guitar pick and tabs that is. Sure, I'll get back to this thread when I've listened to it thoroughly...I have many doubts this time though..but yes, I also had doubts about VE and TGCD which turned out to be my biggest mistakes ever...

I don't really miss the blast beats from MDB. I've never really liked MDBs songs with blast beats. but again..it's just my thought on things..and it doesn't really matter much. I'm glad someone likes the album though.

Do you really like the drum sound?

It's definetely a step upward from the last one. The stylistic range is broader, the violins are awesome (and in some places really original) and there's some classic songs on there, like 'My Body, a funeral', 'For Lies I Sire', the sanguis somethingis one and the last one. The Goth-rockin' one and the blastbeat one make for some much-needed Variation, even if the growls do sound a little strained... Aaron's getting older... All in all at least on par with SODWOL

SODWOL happens to be my fav album the last 10 years from MDB, so I don't agree very much with you YET. My Body, A Funeral is the best song on the album. The chuch organ synth sound they've used in...hmm..don't remember, but one of the songs sounds wierdly thin and bad. But sure, maybe they just thought it sounded better with the song...bah..

They do use the violin much better than I feared in this album. I'm happy about that, because I wasn't looking forward to hearing the violin again since I think there have been way too many bands out there who have killed this instrument within this genre already. At least the way it has been used. But yes, they get extra points for being a bit original there.

Ok, I won't talk anymore before I've really listened to this album over 10 times. I'm on approx 3 times now.

I listened to the album while I was laying in bed last night. Personally I'm just a fan of the band, I like most efforts they've put out (exception for 34.788% of course), so the album I'd give a solid 7.5 or 8, I think it's better than Line of Deathless Kings though.
