Meet The Accolade, Saudi's first all-female rock band

Meet THE ACCOLADE...

Heartwarming story I just found out about: despite the fact that women generally are not encouraged or even allowed to do many activities in Saudi Arabia (varying from sports to driving, a lot is prohibited or restricted), 4 girls formed the first all-female Saudi rock band and are recording an album. The girls need to rehearse and record in secret out of fear for religious authorities and they cannot perform openly. They nonetheless chase their dreams and hope to be able to perform in front of a crowd in the more liberal Dubai. At this moment they rehearse and record in secret in their own country, knowing that severe punishment could be applied should religious authorities find out about their activities. They nonetheless don't fear the taboo and continue recording, chasing their dream.

It is easy for western bands (remember punk bands etc) to complain about their government, record songs complaining about society in general. But they have the best studios available and perform in quality concert halls. These girls have to hide their identity and record in secret because they risk punishment otherwise, and yet their continue to chase their dreams despite the risks involved. Only very deep admiration and lots of praise for that. On top of that, their music doesn't sound too bad neither. Let's hope that indeed they will be able to perform someday, without any fears of police, and paving the path for better women's rights in Saudi Arabia so that many more local girls can finally chase their dreams.

PS: the videos are non-official, as recording a video would be too risky for them at this stage. Hopefully they can be taboo-breaking and contribute to more rights for women. It wouldn't be the first time music has broken huge boundaries. But for sure, regardless what one thinks about the music itself, this band deserves deep admiration. Given the circumstances they record in, their determination and idealism alone, their refusal to let local laws take away their dreams, make this something much bigger than most globally famous bands could ever do. Probably not many people will know about this, while in fact this band deserves more credit than a lot of bands that appear on front pages and festivals around the world. Go girls!!
