your local deli!
ok i have gotten enough thrash for now, and i have thought about getting into melodic metal for a while now, so what better time than now i guess.

I have only really listened to amon amarth and in flames in terms of melodic death and they kick ass, so anything that is like that or i just plain awesome, tell me!

Arch Enemy - Anything before and not including Anthems of Rebellion
Dark Tranquillity - Anything, though especially The Gallery and Character
Mors Principium Est - The Unborn
Arsis - Anything
Eventide - Diaries From the Gallows

I second the Arsis recommendation.
A Celebration of Guilt is fucking KILLER! I saw them last week with Enslaved and immediately bought their albums.

the short list:
Mithotyn - Gathered Around the Oaken Table
Falkenbach - Heralding - The Fireblade
Dark Tranquillity - The Gallery
Dark Tranquillity - The Mind's I
Catamenia - Eskhata
Catamenia - Halls of Frozen North
Insomnium - Since the Day It All Came Down
Hypocrisy - Abducted
Cryptic Wintermoon - The Age of Cataclysm
Mirzadeh - The Creatures of Loviatar

if you like those, see also:
Ensiferum - Ensiferum
Hel - Falland Vörandi
Wyrd - The Ghost Album
Amorphis - Tales From the Thousand Lakes
Amorphis - Far From the Sun
Dan Swanö - Moontower
Dark Tranquillity - Damage Done
Dark Tranquillity - Haven
Eternal Tears of Sorrow - A Virgin and A Whore
SuidAkrA - Emprise to Avalon
SuidAkrA - Lupine Essence
Graveworm - Scourge of Malice
Cryptic Wintermoon - A Coming Storm
Mustan Kuun Lapset - Talvenranta

Quo Vadis - Defiant Imagination
Neuraxis - A Passage into Forlorn/Truth Beyond
Blind Stare - Symphony of Delusions
At the Gates - the Red in the sky is ours
Dark Tranquillity - the Gallery/Skydancer
Carcass - Heartwork

ok the best melodic i have found so far is in flames, arch enemy, dark tranquility, soilwork, arsis, and thats all i have gotten so far, please keep suggestions coming!

Amorphis & Eternal Tears of Sorrow fucking rule. Carcass's Heartwork & Wintersun's s/t are both overrated but good. I've really only scratched the surface of Melodic Metal in that vein. I saw Paradide Lost a few weeks ago & I've been interested in possibly getting one of their albums.

The only album I would recommend from them is Draconian Times. The rest is meh. Alot of people raving about the new one but did nothing 4 me.

btw the Arsis album is kicking my ass all over the place too!

Dark Tranquility, At The Gates, Kataklysm (melodic death/thrash), WIntersun, Carcass (Heartwork - earlier was goregrind).

If you just want melodic metal (as opposed to Melodic Death) try some good power metal:
Tad Morose - Matters Of The Dark
Avantasia - The Metal Opera Pt. 1
Hammerfall - Crimson Thunder

Good stuff if you're willing to tolerate some really (awesomely) cheesy lyrics, vocals, and choruses.
