Metal 2025

The best new albums I heard in August:

Johan Langquist The Castle - S/T
Hard rockin' heavy metal with a lot of epicness and power. Actually this album reminds me a lot of Grand Magus when they're doing their more mid-to-slow paced material. Bit absurd that I haven't really given his return to Candlemass material a chance because I loved this.

Cancerbero - Sempiternal Decay
Cheers to Rad Thrasher for reminding me of these guys, ugly and evil Chilean death metal. Riffs for days.

Whipstriker - Cry of Extinction
Once upon a time I damn near listened to Whipstriker daily but since 2018 he's released nothing but splits, not much to really sink ya teeth into. But this new album proves he's still in top form with some new more melodic tricks. Maybe his best yet! "Six-Eyes Crow Division" is a banger.

Doomentor - ...of Pestilence, War and Death
Continuing their evolution into more of an 'epic' era Bathory band but with their crusty black doom weirdness intact. This time I also hear some 2000's Gravelands elements, especially in the drum sound, which I wonder if it's intentional.

Bronze Hall - Honor & Steel
One-man Finnish atmos/epic black metal, with obvious Bathory comparisons, but also I hear in particular some Enslaved worship going on. Real sucker for shit like this, rough and medieval!

Deathhammer - Crimson Dawn
Just came out so I've only spun it a few times and right now kinda just feels like a nonstop deathrash earrape with no discernible standout tracks or anything, besides the closer. Few more listens and I'm sure it'll take shape but it's an absolute gutsfuck of riffs and noise. The kings!
