Metal

^^^ Your sig is huge. Observant, aren't I?

As for metal, it's too broad of a genre to make Opeth an exclusive. If you're talking about death/black metal, then yes, Opeth is one of the very few bands I like listening to. But then there's prog metal, nu-metal, speed metal, ect to take into consideration. With those, Opeth is not alone in my book.

this Steve Wilson flaming has to stop. So he's helped the production and made some parts more beautiful, let's string him up on a pole for it....yeah, that makes sense.

"Tight as a witches' cleft".
- Best part on the dvd, other than the part where Mike was talking about the beatles trying to sound like they were singing inside an orange.

SodomizerOfMankind, your sig is awesome. Know where I can get a poster of that?

As for Satan, he's a huge influence on my life. Just gotta keep him in check, like everything else. :hotjump: lol

I'm just a fan of good music,be it metal or not. Saying that I mostly listin to metal, but i don't restrict myself.
As for the Steven Wilson bagging, thats just stupid. It's all about the music, great musicians working together to make one sound.
Fuck your elitest 'no-one-will-mess-with-MY-Opeth' bullshit, Opeth are a PROGRESSIVE metal band..and thats exactly what they are doing. Opeth have never been an all-out metal band, and everyone knows this. Akerfeldt thought bringing in Wilson was a logical decision to help them evolve their mellow side, and its worked in my opinion. And I'm sure they will work with Wilson again, so get used to it
If you appreciate good music you will appreciate Opeth in whatever they do.
:notworthy

Stop saying saying fucking IMO all the time when you're slamming the other person's opinion in the same post.

Point made FourthHorseman. And please stay in the topic of this post, go flame SW on SW-flaming-posts (there are enough for you to enjoy).

That said, I'm 98% Metalhead. I like to listen to Pink Floyd or The Beatles once in a while, but I prefer metal waaay much more than anything else. Opeth remains one of the very few bands using death metal vocals I listen to, and I must admit that I like Mike's growl quite much :hotjump:

In the begining, Yes they were.

I'm with you on this one Alan. On Orchid and maybe even MAYH they sounded more like a metal band with soft parts, less than a unique progressive band with a fusion of a bunch of styles.

Is anyone here besides myself not a fan of metal, but just a fan of Opeth?
Back a few years ago I was pretty big into metal, then I began to realize a few things. All the metal bands I loved were influenced by bands that weren't metal at all. This made me take interest in other types of music beside metal which I am very thankful for. It seems like there is a some sort of new wave of true metal musicians who are too directly influenced by only metal and the music comes out heavy and still metal sounding but basically it isn't original or musical.. however I acknowledge that there are a few new bands that are obviously not completely metal heads.

I have to make a confession. I'll probably get kicked off this board for admitting that I like some of the bands I'm about to admit that I like, but it's a long answer to the question posted in this thread. I'm not a metalhead. Please don't hate me for the music I like.

When I first really started getting into music, I was just listening to shit that was on the radio and on MTV, because I didn't know about anything else out there. When I started listening to -- I know I'm going to be crucified for this one -- a band called 311, was the first time I started to discover that there were a ton of bands out there that were truly great musicians that I had been completely unaware of. 311 is still one of my all-time favorite bands (yes, even though they rap sometimes), as are Incubus and Dave Matthews Band, two of first bands I was ever REALLY into. This all started when I was about 15, or 7-8 years ago.

When I started listening to Tool, I found the first heavy, dark band that really moved me like the aforementioned bands had moved me. That slowly started to open me up to metal, which I had once hated because I thought it was pointless and stupid noise. I started to get into some metal bands like Killswitch Engage, Mudvayne, Shadows Fall and In Flames, eventually finding Opeth and realizing how amazing a metal band can be. Opeth was the first, and still the only, metal band that moves me like 311 did (does) and Dave Matthews Band did (does) and Tool did (does). So to answer the question, no. I'm nothing close to a metalhead. I'm just a fan of what I believe to be great music and a devoted fan of bands that I feel are truly exceptional. Those bands that I believe are truly exceptional rarely fall into any specific category of music, as they are the ones stretching the limits and pushing the envelope of what is generally accepted within a genre. I've tried to get into really extreme death and black metal bands, but I have a hard time hearing much musicality to any of it. I think Opeth is about the limit of my metal tolerance. But, then again, there was a time when Incubus was the heaviest band I listened to, so who knows?

I am not your typical metal fan by any means.
Infact, to most, I appear to be a yuppy just about: I take care of my appearance, I like good clothes etc etc
But I have been a Metal fan since 1986 (which shocks a LOT of people I meet). I started off with Maiden, buying Somewhere In Time back in 86, and then went on to Testament, Megadeth, Kreator, Sodom, Mortal Sin... the list goes on (excuding those DICKS Metallica!)
I went through my phase of wearing black, having longer hair, patches on my jackets etc, but now I am clean cut.
Over the years, I have loved many genres of music, infact, I am VERY passionate about music in general. I will not tolerate crap music (eg top 40 etc), and I am extremely selective as to what I will like. I demand a high standard of music at all times, and Opeth passes with more than flying colours as we all know:-)
So yeah... I met an Opeth fan at work the other week, and I'm sure he was shocked that someone who looks like me likes Opeth so much. Infact, when I go to my local metal store here in Sydney, I get a few strange looks (happened recently when I went to buy some Camel).
