Metallica Black Album track by track...

I'm not buying that bullshit about them thinking E was the lowest they could go ...

Off the top of my head, "Small Hours" and "Thing ..." are both drop D

And why is this under the Equipment section?

^ Yes but that was what Bob Rock said, that as they were doing "Sad But True" he pointed how all the songs were in E and this should be heavier and they acted like dumb musicians saying "duh, I thought E was the lowest note" and he said "Let me show you something you didn't know" ... essentially

I'm saying that they had already been drop tuning for years over the course of a couple of albums for specific songs ... so that Bob Rock's statement is kinda bullshit

also because changing the tuning but not the way of your playing doesn't alter it too much IMO.
If you tune down to D but keep playing your usuall riffy stuff it doesnt really change a lot for me, feeling wise.
Could have left it in E without a problem, Sad but true also kicks ass in higher tunings.

Great article...

I think what he meant about the tuning for "Sad But True" is that the band was explaining why they had a tendency to write everything in E - it's the lowest note that they happened to be tuned to during the writing sessions.

I agree...I didn't get the feeling that Bob thought he was explaining something new to them. "Thing That Should Not Be" is in D too.
