Mic Pre: suggestions?

I know this has been posted before, but it looks like the masters of the universe have deleted all threads older than four weeks old, so:

I'm looking for a good mic pre for guitars around $300-400? I would prefer 2 channels, but if a single channel one is a lot better for the same price, then I would go for that. I'm thinking, Art VLA pro, or RNP or something similar.

Any suggestions?

I've heard a lot about them. What is it that makes them unique? Are they just really clean sounding, or do they have a certain color that just kicks ass?
