Micr.d.t – Feathreface
Self-released – Demo – 2005

I have been following the crazy world of Micr.d.t with much interest ever since receiving their debut demo to review. And with every release the Vixta - the man behind this singular project - has progressed; Feathreface is quite far removed from the noisier first release. Trying to name the influences on display here would be futile; suffice it to say that this demo touches on all kinds of electronica. Some beats, mixed with harsh white noise are reminiscent of breakcore or drill n bass at its harshest, while plain, nasty white noise reminds me of early 80’s power electronics ala Whitehouse, albeit minus a pissed off vocalist screaming over the top. Sinister soundscapes ring of dark ambient, less caustic white noise moments reminiscent of glitch are just audible. Some sections are pure, pitch-black drum and bass. This amalgamation of so many forms of electronica was the next logical step in the Vixta’s sound from an effective, but less diverse mix. He has pulled it off with style, and his usually dark sense of humour. Suffice it to say, this is a collection of fluffy songs, reminiscent of the joyous frolickings of bunny rabbits in a flowery field!

So, as you might imagine, Featherface has lots of white noise, of all types; rhythmic, jarring, lulling, and abrasive tones are all used to good effect. Beats are prominent, giving the often structureless compositions a more tangible form. Samples are used to great effect - as you may have gathered from the tongue-in-cheek title, horror films are a big inspiration, and Evil Dead dialogue appears every now and then. Trippy vocal samples are also prevalent. A tongue-in-cheek humour, and an air of self-parody is present, helping to stop the demo drowning pretension.

So, in conclusion, Micr.d.t has impressed me again. This eclectic mix of genres, moods and atmospheres should be enough to secure the Vixta a record deal, for he certainly deserves one. This demo can purchased from the Vixta direct for a very reasonable price, and comes highly recommended for those that like their electronica caustic and original. Perfect music to make little children scream in terror and then run away crying. And, from the sounds of it, quite a few adults too…
