Alright, so I'm probably beating a dead horse here but... Are there any tutorials flying round on the interweb on how to program and use midi bass? Searching on google yielded no results and you lot are my only hope. :bah:

At this moment in time I'm not really in any position to go out and buy the cheapest bass I can find used, so I'm going to have to make do till I can afford one.
I've looked at Trilian Bass, wept at the sight of the price tag, sworn to kick the guy in the jewels for pricing the damn thing at $300 and then contemplated suicide. Fuck you Spectrasonics!!! :yell:

I wouldn't have a problem with the price tag if I would be using it more than a handful of times. Free is preferable, although I'm prepared to spend up to $25~.

Ps. I've tried midi bass before, and could never get it working properly. It always managed to somehow not detect the lowest string (tuned to A# or G depending on the song)

Many thanks.

EDIT
Forgot to mention that I'm using a Mac, so I've probably shot myself in the foot here, most likely limiting my choices even more.

You're better off just pitchshifting guitar for bass.

I disagree. There's a plugin vst called Trillian Bass. Look it up.
Purchased it last year and it sounds great. best virtual bass vst out there, imho.

Any other suggestions? Tried the MIDI Piano although it sounded a tad wonky and didn't hold up as well as I had hoped (I'm relatively sure I was doing it wrong).
How does 4front bass compete along side Trilian? Haven't gotten around to using it yet, but I'll post back if I've gotten any result from it.

Although I have a bass and mostly use that to record, I write bass lines using midi and this bass vsti:

It's not anything awesome, but if you're stuck without any cash to buy Trillian this one will work well enough if you low pass the shit out of it and mess with the ASDR settings a bit. It also does lower tunings, I've done Bb on it and I'm pretty sure it goes lower.

Looks like a solid vsti! One problem though, it's for Windows only. :bah:

For the price of Trilian Bass I could get myself an el cheapo second hand bass which plays alright. Which would be the wiser option? I couldn't imagine a $300 bass handling G at all.

with this Trilian VST , can you play notes below B? because a lot of bass software is limited to B ( I think that basses from Trilogy also from spectatronics had B as the lowest note), so i could use it for more downtuned stuff.
